Living Room and Dining Room Decor
Looking to decorate living room and dining room in 1890s cottage I've just bought. Rooms mirror each other, either side of a hall, with the dining room leading off the kitchen.
I was wondering if I should go for similar decor in both. Was thinking of painting all the woodwork white, to freshen it up, and go for a light grey on the walls. What colour of carpet would work best with this. Was also wondering if I should leave the doors in their varnished state for a contrast, as this is more in keeping with a traditional cottagey feel.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Comments (6)Yes, pictures are helpful to draw people in. Dark would be fine - if on a darker wall. How about sticking with the grey of sofa, dark grey theme and then have the two longer walls to work the proportions and add some light. Pic attached. Alternatively, pic attached, you could do all light neutral walls but then crate a different effect with ceiling to floor dark panel curtains to add luxury and add the darker end wall effect! Comments (8)Hi. The room is looking good. I would also move the desk only because it feels like it's missing a chair Plus obviously not practical if you intend to use it! If you dressed it as a console with lamp and accessories with art over etc though I think it might work (then have a large plant the other side of the sofa. i would pull both the sofa and chair out a little from the walls. I'm not sure what you think of this? I personally would opt for shades of blue to break up the orange a little. The lamp would go behind the chair And just the rectangular cushion on it. I would Look for art in your colours to go by the chair (light switch wall) and behind the plant/desk. Accessorise the shelves with a combination of books, an ornament or 2 plus your framed photos....See More

6 years agoIf you really want to paint the wood I’d probably go for something a bit darker than the walls for a modern look. If you want a light grey for walls maybe try shaded white also by farrow and ball, it will look more grey in a north facing room. Alternatively you could go dark for the walls, 2nd pic is just showing it with a beige sofa. I might also be tempted to go for wood floors if you paint the wood! Why not set up an ideabook so people can give more specific ideas?

6 years agoI love those windows. I imagine the living room as a gentleman’s study or club. They don’t have to be all wood panelling or have tonnes of books though. Dark green or red are great colours. This is not advice though, this is just what I would want in one of your gorgeous rooms!

6 years agoI agree about painting the picture rail so it is no longer wood. Have you thought about adding a colour above the picture rail and having it white below? A couple of examples below:
I think with the woodwork, it does depend on the flooring you choose, all wood could be a bit much depending on the colour you go for. I would probably leave the wood in the windows skirting etc, but paint the picture rail and fire surround.
