Wall colour for open plan living/dining

Hi
We have just bought a house - a 1930's semi in Somerset, England. I've attached photos of the open plan living room/dining room. All decor and furnishings are previous owner's. We have ripped all the stone cladding and fireplace off and are reinstating an open fire in living room. We are sanding the original floorboards throughout.
I'd love some colour ideas for the room. The dining room window is south facing/living room north facing. I would like a very neutral wall colour - the looks I like are in my albums but we like an eclectic/ mid century/retro type look and we have a mid century dining table and chair set, starburst clock, Ercol armchairs, and have just bought an oxblood leather sofa. (Pic in comments)
Should I stick to one colour throughout? Thinking of an off /warm white? I'd really appreciate some ideas of colours to look at as family commitments leave me little time to peruse the paint stores and I need to make some quick decisions! Thank you:)

Hi Milly - I love the same style as you. I have a sixties house and have used Little Green Portland Stone and Slaked Lime. The P.S. colour looks fabulous with wood and great with accent colours such as Teal and Mustard.

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

Just to confirm..... on your sketch above.... the too. on the left will be the new space measuring approx 4m X 4m including the green area? If so, that will be tight for everything! And your furniture us all off scale. Your 2 seater sofa has been drawn as 1m long which isn't right. Your kitchen is all out. I assume I've picked you up incorrectly and your room is actually bigger!

great idea colour happy. If you wanted to add a bit of interest. you could have a feature wall with this wallpaper from Mini Modern. A bit retro but contemporary too.

I would select one or two colours max (complimentary colours are easier to work with) and then combine this with more natural or neutral finishes so either woods, stone, white or grey (cold grey will look generally more contemporary or warm greys will be a bit more comforting)
