Fireplace make over

We have a very ornate fire surround which I'm thinking of painting a different colour or changing completely... looking for ideas on colours or alternatives. The fire itself works fine and I don't mind the marble insert but want to update the surround. Ideas welcome! Thanks!

Unless you love it, which you clearly don’t, I wouldn’t was any time or effort on it. Remove it and buy something you do like, to replace it.

Match your carpet colour to the fireplace tiles or a shade or two darker. The walls in a lighter shade of the tiles and then use a rug & cushions to bring in colour. The beige will keep it warm. John Lewis do some nice beige curtains in either a silk look or a linen effect. Change your wall lights to something more modern and your centre light. Dar Lighting have got a factory shop - may be worth a visit or you can always keep an eye out on Ebay. Good Luck & Enjoy!

Hi Saz I attacked my brick work with a wire brush, scrubbed with water then used brick and mortar cleaner (a hydrochloric acid solution) to get the last of the plaster off. It's quite a lot of work but it doesn't cost much if you want to have a try before considering other options. I have read you are then supposed to seal it with a watered down PVC solution but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Pictures are so personal - if you are really attached to that picture and having it in that location, why not consider reframing it? I think it is too small in its current framing, but to go for a wider double or triple white mount and a wider, but simple frame in a white, washed wood or painted style could work really well and might be cheaper than investing in another painting! I think reframing a picture can often transform it to something with the wow factor.

We are doing the same. weve done our build in 2 phases so weve just conpleted the single storey rear extension and about to start building the double storey in April. Although we are making our front box room bigger by taking it out over the new attached garage to make hopefully 4 double bedrooms. the room will only be 2.38m wide and around 4.3m long with a 90cm space for a shower, toilet and sink. hoping it works and the above from man about the house gives me hope it will as i plan to do something similar with a small area at the back literally for the bed and some bedside tables then a small walk through wardrobe area and then a thin ensuite. will decide where to put stud walls once the shell and floor in built so i can determine the space needed.

It’s very French rococo which isn’t to everyone’s taste. What do you think it’s made of? My friend had a fire surround in her 1990s mock Tudor house which looked a bit cheap. She painted it Bone by F&B and it looks so much better. I think it’s worth painting it in another colour to go with your decor and get rid of the plasticky shine. Use eggshell which has a very slight sheen.

Hi thanks for your comments. Surround is wood so we'd sand it down first and then paint it. We are also replacing the dark flooring for warm oak flooring and planning to paint the walls too. Wondering if one colour on fireplace (eggshell) and the same colour on the wall behind (in emulsion) would help to blend it in. Bone could be an option thanks! Any other colour suggestions welcome

I think painting it the same colour as your walls is a great idea. Here’s a couple of examples where that has been done, but with less ornate fireplaces.

This is the space and it leads through into a games room. We plan to put warm coloured oak flooring down and also paint the whole area. As you can see it's quite a dark corner.
