It depends totally on your lifestyle and I can understand your wish for your son to have a space to have his friends over. I always think it's a shame to reinstate walls which have been removed. If you like cooking socially then your plan is great. Everything can be in one room with the kitchen as a snug. It's striking a balance between accommodating a son and making the most of the house. I would leave the kitchen where it is which saves a bit of money and update it to suit you. I would consider screening off part of the lounge/diner with some sort of moveable screen so that it could maybe be pushed back against a wall when not required.

I think that if adding walls and moving the kitchen are on the table you should also be considering extension. Consider posting a picture of the outside so we can visualise the extension possibilities. You should also consider budget.

Thanks both . Unfortunately an extension is out of the question right now due to lack of finances . I do have a cellar which I would convert to extra living space should that change but I would say I am confined to making the most of what Is already there and trying to make the most out of a scheme that will give myself and so some space

So if there is no budget for an extension then likely moving the kitchen is out.

So your main question then becomes keep it open plan or divide the space. Personally I think it will feel much smaller if you divide the space so recommend you live with it as open plan for at least six months

Agree with Jonathan. In the meantime, you should consider how you can arrange your sons bedroom to cater for his gaming needs and if you are concerned about how to control that you can look to implement some online controls to limit his usage during the night for example.

I'd keep it as is. My open plan house has a 6x4m lounge-dining with the open kitchen in a 2x2.5m corner and it works just fine for our family of 3. But i would not sacrifice space to cater my sons gaming needs. (If your finance allows a conservatory in the future, he can game in the lounge while you enjoy a good book or music in there.)

Thankyou - that’s useful to know I couldn’t visualise if it was big enough . Probably my poor choice of words it wouldn’t be just a gaming room more of a snug so we both use and had our own spaces if he was entertaining and wanted to watch tv with his friends :-)
