Help with ugly garage

We have a garage which we can’t afford to replace at the moment. We need to retain it for dry safe storage. We will add a new roof and paint the door. Any low cost ideas for disguising the spa stone concrete panels? Trellis and climbers is my only idea at the moment as timber cladding seems pricey. Not sure if the outside could be painted? Thanks.

I love the idea of creepers. Is there a small piece that you could paint using something l like Dulux weathershield or sandstone paint? Try it and see. If they don't do samples see if you can find a small amount of leftover paint from friends, family or a whatsapp group. There are some lovely colours to choose from. I do prefer the green option though. Check what direction it faces and soil type you have for a creeper choice.

You could paint it but if you’re going to use trellis and climbers you probably won’t need to. A Climbing Hydrangea is a good choice as it self clings so you won’t need trellis. Has lovely white flowers in the summer. A good evergreen climber is Star Jasmine which has a wonderful scent . It is a little tender and I lost mine last winter, but someone near me has a huge one climbing up and over a wall, so go figure. For colour you can add Clematis and Roses. However plants can be pricey so worth checking which is cheaper, cladding or plants. Plants every time for me! This is climbing hydrangea.

Legally I don't think you are supposed to do anything to a neighbour's fence/boundary wall etc except erect your own fence to hide it. There is already a shed attached to this wall so I assume there's either a good relationship with the neighbours or they don't know and weren't asked; as Daisy said they poss can't see it. It doesn't hurt to ask out of courtesy, I'd only think there would be a problem if any drilling affected their internal plaster but if it's a garage that might not be an issue. I wouldn't put up with that view from a lovely new window seat feature when it's a quick and potentially dramatic improvement (i say whilst lying in bed with no attempt to tackle my eyesore of a garden!!) You could try to paint the pvc, with the proper primer, but don't expect much from it. Temporary make-over. We live in a small white 1950 home (Netherlands) and have replaced most of our windows over the years, from wood to pvc (with woodgrain, white indoors, warm grey out). Better insulation (sound and cold), less to paint, but immense cost. Do you have the budget to change them now or does your budget limit you to rendering and paintjobs? Same for the porch redo, changing the location of the front door and/or roof shape. Rain in Snowdonia comes plenty, so I'd adress the driveway first. I'd suggest an infiltration pit* a few meters away from the house, with drains alongside the garage and house. Enlarge the 'patio' and steps and add gravel along the front, so water can sink into the ground quicker. *) We've made one by drilling 30mm holes in a large pvc rain barrel, burrying it upside down with plenty of gravel and sand around it and connecting our gutters and regular rain barrel overflow to it, since we have no sewage in the back of the house. You could add a pump to the pit for summer lawn sprays, but we decided not to.

Our house came with a rather unusual shed we decided to keep when we redid the garden. It’s a low brick wall with glass sides and a wood & glass door. The roof is clear corrugated plastic roof. Inside we have a wood counter, shelving, and a beer refrigerator. We use it as a bar for garden parties, our young kids love playing in it, plus it stores our garden cushions etc. I couldn’t find a great picture (and it’s too cold and rainy today!) but this gives you the idea. If you do have purely functional storage sheds elsewhere, you could build something attractive that allows for multiple uses.

I would consider off white paint on the render, new white thin framed simpler windows and invest in a really smart garage door (cedar) and gate (cedar too) and front door. Add lots of greenery in architectural plants. It wouldn't look too dramatically different from the other houses and white windows won't date. Hey. my parents have got a wall on one side of their garden like this. For the main part their plants cover it but where they have a patio area they have put up some willow screening and put some pebbles and potted plants around the bottom to hide the bottom. looks good.

While the planting would be ideal, the building seems to be surrounded by concrete. Best quickest and cheapest option would be to put up batten and board to cover it up and either varnish or paint. We had a really ugly block wall at the side of our house which I disguised with some tongue and groove panelling about 7 years ago which I have painted. I have a raised bed there but it instantly looked better with the panelling on it even before I did the bed. It’s a little wild but you see the idea.

I would suggest some panelling like wicker or tongue and groove like Siobhan suggested. If the climbers don't go so well or take their time, at least you still have a nice surface to look at as opposed to the stone panels

Lovely garden Siobhan. Who doesn’t love a bit of wild! Is that Common Jasmine climbing up? One of my favourite climbers if a bit rampant! 😊

It is Sonia and tbh is a bit of a thug and totally wrong for the area which is pretty shady so little flowers therefore little fragrance! I am thinking of doing a major transplant this autumn. It’s extreme vigorous so has all but taken over that bed.
