Curtain problem large bifold doors

I am really struggling to find a solution for my 4m wide bifold doors. Yes I know I could have had integrated blinds or could even retro fit similar now but that isn’t the look I desire.

I don’t want roller blinds due to how they will look flat and plain when closed and Roman blinds wouldn’t work as the stack when open will take too much room.

I would like curtains. But my preference is to have them within the recess and all the curtains to pull back to one side only which means crossing the midline of any pole or track. This is proving a huge issue due to the very wide measurement. Are there any solutions? Or is my only option to mount outside the recess and have a pair on either side, I’m sad about that as it gives a traditional look when we are going for modern/scandi/clean.

Yea I saw these on blinds2go, they are the look I like. But I asked their customer service about being able to draw both curtains to one side and it was a no go. I think I’ll just have to accept the compromise and draw to both sides outside the alcove. I have plenty wall space for that, I just really like seeing a blank wall lol

Seen this and given the date i think you will have sorted. But anyway..... Th idea of sliding folding doors is great. The technical quality has got much better over the years and they seal so well - better now than sliding (except if you spend huge amounts of money) They stack smaller (and therefore can blend more) than large folding/hinged. My view would be that you should have a smaller hinged door somewhere close to for quick/easy access

There is no right or wrong answer - and as suppliers and installers of award winning bifold AND sliding door systems we have no bias towards one or the other. When we get asked this question by customers there are a number of initial things we would ask to try and make some recommendations - and we have written a blog all about these. Probably the most valuable question is how often are you likely to have the doors fully open. Our SF55 aluminium bifold doors can be manufactured up to 1.1m wide and have an industry leading narrow sightline of 115mm (the amount of frame visible when closed) and over a 7m run of 7x1m panels you will have 6 intermediate frames totalling 690mm of aluminium. We do two aluminium sliding door systems the Grand Slider (83mm sightlines) or our award winning theEDGE (narrow 24mm sightline) - both can take glass sizes of up to 3m wide so over a 7m run of 3x2.33m panels you will have 166mm of intemediate aluminium visible with the Grand Slider and just 48mm visible with theEDGE. So if your doors are closed more often than open there is significantly less frame than glass in sliding doors, however the trade off is that unless you opt for a pocket slider you are not able to open a sliding door completely to create a total 7m opening like you are with bifold doors - you would only open 4.66m of the 7m (or 5.25m if you went for four sliding door panels). In terms of thermal performance both SF55 and the sliding door systems can be double or triple glazed and achieve pretty similar U-Values and in terms of price the SF55 and Grand Slider systems work out to be almost identical - although theEDGE is a bit more because of the advanced engineering required to create such a narrow profile. JC thank you again - it's actually your photos that we have saved on our wishlist so it really was a big help! New blinds sound absolutely brilliant so we're going to get in touch once the work starts and hopefully they can provide ours too. If you have any photos they would be most gratefully received, the mechanism you have to pull them all down sounds fab! I presume you've not had any problems and they're still going strong! At the risk of pushing my luck, do you have any idea of the cost of your lovely sliding doors, to have so much glass, compared to say bifold doors? We've decided we want large sliders to maximise the light, but I'm worried they will be loads more than bifolds which were in our original builder's quote, eek!! Bifold doors 3.6m opening - are 1.2m doors too heavy?

In a previous house we had 3x1m aluminium bi fold doors. All doors stacked outside to the right. I loved them but I think anything larger than 1m panels would have been too heavy and unwieldy. One of the panels was our back door and clipped onto the second door to secure it. But a glass panel of 1.2m is a big door to be opening on a windy day. I would go for the 4x 1m option. On a warm sunny day it will be lovely to have that large opening. Ours were SE facing and some days they would be open from 7 am to bedtime. We only had one issue with them. Sometimes in hot weather they would swell and be difficult to close until they cooled down. However I have never heard of this happening before.

I assume it’s a ‘no go’ to have wave curtains pulled to one side because of a central support on the track?

I’m not sure about central support as it’s a track not a pole it may be ok. But the guy said it is to do with the way the curtains are attached, the end hook is fixed so cannot be pulled along. I’d love to hear from anyone who has these wave curtains, I’m imagining I could adapt it somehow but wouldn’t want to take the risk on very expensive curtains.

My daughter has wave curtains. I've just had a look and the only reason they'd not stack one side is because the end hooks are fixed. I see no reason why they couldn't be sliding hooks instead. Can't tell you where they came from as they were in the house when they moved in.

HI Ruth, have you considered vertical blinds? They can stack to one side and can work well with bifold doors.

This is an example of vertical blinds we supplied fo sliding doors, but these vertical blinds could also work with 4m wide bifold doors..

I have had what you describe in a previous house. The curtain rings for the pole were made in such a way that they were able to slide over the central support and the whole curtain stacked to one side. They are known as C shape or passing rings.

However, curtains to cover a 4m window are going to take up quite a lot of space when they are stacked back within the recess during the day.

Thanks for your reply. Yes you are right. As such we have decided that we will mount a track outside the recess as we do have a wall return that the curtains can stack against to limit the impact on the window. It’s expensive as it’s such a big space but I’m hopeful it will look good and function as wished.
