Wow your ceiling must be really, really low then ? Most extractors have to have a gap between 650mm to 760mm between the bottom of them and the hob part of the cooker - so in your case the lid should have clearance even if set at standard height, even if it’s an over depth appliance. What height is the ceiling ? Is the cooker going right into the corner ? Might be useful to have it 150mm from the corner,so you have a small clearance for pan handles on the left. As well as a chimney style you could have a contemporary extractor or a contemporary canopy or hide the extractor in a cabinet or put the extractor in the ceiling. You have lots of options. I love your idea. Please don't be swayed into having a huge deep extractor. Your image is stunning. It is so subtle you don't even realise that it is an extractor. I agree about not having it so close when you are cooking. I would say if you use all the zones all the time then you might find it's not powerful enough but most people only use a couple so it should be fine. For me design always trumps practicality. Each to their own. If you cook with lids on pots then you don't always need to use it either.

Just an opinion on the having a gas hob on an island in the middle of the downstairs. Placing anything on an island limits its functionality. It is much better when the island is free of sink or hob (and these are on walls) as it has better flow and can be used as a gathering point, a buffet point, a prep counter top, homework station and many other things. If you compromise these functions by including hob with the gubbins (extractor, utensils, oils, seasoning etc) right in the middle of the house I think it is a waste. Every time you cook you'll have to clean the hob. A gas hob takes some cleaning. I recommend a hob on a wall area with a ceiling flush extractor. Keep your island for prep, storage, gathering, nibbles etc, unless you are totally into teppanyaki and like to spend time cleaning hobs.
