Kitchen hood questions! Help please!
Hello,
I am fitting a new kitchen and I'm planning to put in a wall-mounted extractor concealed in plasterboard, something like the photo below. It will be venting to the outside, not recycling.
My induction hob will be 90cm wide.
The hoods I'm looking at are designed to fit into a wall cupboard and are 90cm wide by only 30cm deep, with peripheral extraction.
I really like the idea of having the hood set back a little and not right in front of my head, if it works OK!
I know everyone always says that an extractor should be bigger than the hob, but these seem to be widely available - do they actually work efficiently?
The canopy I'm building would be 100cm wide, so would create a bit of a funnel, wider (but not deeper) than the hob.
The alternative would be to get one that's designed to go in a ceiling over an island and 40cm deep or more (but quite a bit more expensive, so I'd prefer this option).

Comments (31)I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. Comments (7)Hi Gemma. Our old kitchen had a similar problem with the extractor reaching the outside wall via a run along the top of a series of wall cabinets. As we didn't want a the same problem we redesigned our new kitchen with the hob on the opposite side of the room on an outside wall. Comments (12)So.. tweaked your second layout a bit to try and improve the looks and lines. Hence the island is smaller. Plus side: the dishwasher won't be such a triphazard when open. With kids walking around (aka suddenly behind you ninja style) you want some freedom of movement. Upper units on the sink wall. Free hanging range hood above the stove (or built in oven and cooktop?). Symmetrical drawers alongside stove. Plates, bowls, cutlery next to sink, close to dishwasher. Trash bin below sink. Tip: Pick 3 drawer type base units, add a blind shallow drawer in the lowest drawer of the 91cm unit, great for small stuff. PRO7 months agoWe use them all the time in our designs, and never had an issue with extraction! Go for a good brand, with high venting rates. Check the noise rating and get a low decibel level, and consider some accoustic deadening in your bulkhead. Falmec is of course an excellent brand, though personally I would have a look at Faber - excellent quality, some great, low profile styles with stunning lighting too.
