Design Dilemma DIY Fireplaces

Keep this fireplace or replace it?

Should we try and update this fireplace or just remove it all and replace with a stove? first pic is with a gas fire on it which is now removed, unsure what might make it look more appealing…paint the surround or change the tiles? or just lose it all? The tiles are very blue.

If you want to keep the house authenticity then don't change the tiles with stone/granite cladding, painting the Wood frame white with help since it harmonizes the blue tiles, you can look up blue tiles fireplace idea

I would never keep something I didn't like, it makes no sense. Think about your style and vibe and make it how you want it. I'm all for period features, generally I love them, but if it becomes the 'thing' in the room and you have to decorate around it then look for alternatives. I don't like or dislike it but I've kept things before and regretted it.

Hi, into only taken 2 years ..but finally finished the room, the box to the right of the fireplace we found out housed gas pipes so ripped all that out, couldn't put in a wooden 1930's fireplace if I wanted a burner due to fire regulations, so opted for a concrete wooden effect beam, with a natural slate underneath , we stripped the walls, replastered and finally painted... just waiting on my new curtains and I can shop for a nice new rug possibly :) before and after ...

Hello Tani, Ah I thought it was for you.. You're moving aren't you? Anyway, sorry I added them right after I posted so you could see exactly what I mean.. Perhaps you can paint and paint the rail but leave the treads... That way the rails in place but you don't see it! It would though have to be in the colour of the walls to work... You could even paint the treads a completely different colour if you wanted to say blend with the floor? There are countless ways to deal with these stairs... So many options... So perhaps nothing really needed than a lick of paint (or not as you may prefer) and perhaps new treads.. Maybe though discuss with the eventual occupants as they may not like my ideas at all! : ))

If you are thinking of reinstating a real fire your hearth may have to be changed so wait until you decide as you may want to change it then. Otherwise I would paint the surround in a good quality paint to suit your taste. I used a flat eggshell by Farrow and Ball, creamy white called New White, on my mahogany fireplace about 15years ago and while it took a few coats to do it properly it has lasted and us still perfect. These kind of fireplaces are pretty divisive with a fair share of lovers and haters. In this instance I'd go with you instincts: it's not very pretty plus it's out of keeping for the period. I'd reinstate something more sympathetic to the age of the house, or seal it up and enjoy the additional wall space if it gives more flexibility (more important for a bedroom perhaps than a living room where you may want a focal point) Best of luck whatever you decide.

Becareful Vintage home finish are often Made by Wood or material that isnt produced anymore, so when buying house it better to choose the one that gonna be less change to it since it also cost efficient and might potentially decrease the property value with generic interior that often found in market
