Windbreak solution for a balcony

Hi,

I live in a block of flats on the 4th floor, and my balcony gets very strong winds. I think the fact that it's open on two sides creates strong drafts, making the space uncomfortable to use.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest ways to reduce the wind. Would installing a screen or glazing on just the shorter side make a noticeable difference, or would I need wind protection on both open sides for it to be effective?

The quote for glazing only the shorter side came back at around £4,000, which is more than I can afford to spend. I'm looking for more affordable alternatives.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is a tricky one Jurgita. An eye watering £4000 to glaze one side - how would you clean the outside of this glass? It would need to be hinged like a door. Much cheaper solutions such as bamboo screens or plastic ‘ivy’ curtains might be effective but would cut out the light. This see-through plastic tarpaulin might be one solution to try but how practical would it be to attach it to your balcony opening? A transparent curtain such as a shower curtain on a rail so you could open and close it when needed would be ideal and you can buy weights on a roll to put in the hem to hold it straight. Have any of your neighbours found a solution?

Just to clarify, is the £4000 quote to glaze the section above your existing glass rail? Or is it to fully glaze the whole section? In my post above I was thinking about the top half being glazed that you could open it to clean.

Thanks Jonathan, but horizontal wires or bars (other than a hand rail at the top) are not acceptable to Building Control as they consider that children could easily climb up them. For wire mesh to be acceptable the apertures would need to be sufficiently small that a child's foot could not fit in.

You could look for hanging balcony tables. Can't quite work out how the balcony wall/railing construction is, but perhaps you can find one that you can simply hang over it. Ikea has a nice selection of solar powered lights. They also have a wooden flower box that would maybe fit at the end of the balcony.

A continuous 3 glass screen isnt a great option at all - it will have to be super heavy and thick to not bend. You can easily subdivide it into at least 2 sections, it will substantially lower the price as well. I assume the locations for the fixings of the posts have been discussed with the engineer, so that they sit and are fixed to the structure? As for alternative materials for the balustrade - personally we haven't ever done it in timber, most clients prefer glass (on metal posts) or metal - the latter is much cheaper, but glass is nicer. Can you share a picture or two of your roof as is please? Happy to advise more then.

I was looking into some options of outdoor shades since there are custom made ones based on the specific measurements. However, I am not sure if they can be installed in my balcony and whther they would withstand strong winds. Also, I would need to find someone to install it.
