What material was used for the deck and treads in this uncovered staircase in a snowy climate?

It is a wood called Ipe. It has great qualities for use as decking here in the Midwest. It commands a higher purchase price than most outdoor woods, but holds up longer - so the entire cost of ownership is actually reasonable. You'll be able to learn more about it if you search the web for Ipe.

My company specialises in renewing and upgrading existing stairs as well as designing and making new ones. Here's a project that we completed at the end of 2016, the first pictures are how the stairs looked when we first visited and the last ones with the glass are how we changed it. Here's the review from our client who was very pleased http://bit.ly/2oYjRFi . All our work is designed and made in house so you don't have to bother with taking templates to a local glazier. As you have seen from the number of replies the range of options are unlimited. Most things can be achieved with the right client and good budget but to avoid spending too much on something you don't need it is important to gain an understanding of how you want the whole house to look; I always request that my clients show me images of things they like, furniture, interiors so that a design can be developed that not only complements the design/ concept of a home but enhances. Depending on your budget, you could make a saving by just renewing the stairs in a design that incorporates a glazed banister and fixes the issues that you are concerned about. Site installation work is far more expensive than just making something from scratch in our workshop. I don't believe you have any problems offering B&B with the stairs as they are as far as Building Regs go. What you should probably take account of though is providing a staircase for the guests that they are comfortable with and feel safe using, if you are certain that all the guests will be fully mobile adults then in the strict reading of the regs your stairs will comply anyway. Building Regs approved document K requires gaps in staircase risers and banisters to be 100 mm or less to provide adequate safety for children. Following this, but also keeping open risers means adding a small downstand underneath the tread to reduce the open riser height. It will also pose problems adding glass to the side of your existing flight because you will have difficulty because there are not convenient points to fix the glass, nor have the carriages - the beams supporting the treads underneath - been designed to carry the additional load from the glass or stair users pressing on it, so additional structure must be added to the carriage to carry the glass, everything is possible but most people have a budget so I must ask you - What is yours? Thanks for all the kind words and advice. I only want a runner because I love the look of them and that it still allows some of the wooden 'bones' of the staircase to be displayed. Given that absolutely no-one has said "yeah - install it yourself - it's so easy!" I'm definitely feeling inclined to save up for longer and get it done professionally. I'm currently thinking of going for the wool loop carpet attached in a beige/natural colour-way and edged with a dark charcoal linen border.

Hi Marinela, There are lots of ways of doing this but the obvious issue is that it has to safe for the boys. I have enclosed a few ideas, hope this helps. None of these could be classed as the perfect solution but you can take ideas from each and miix & match. You need to consider the stair construction, the examples shown are in timber but a carpet would be softer and safer for the kids. If you do go for wood I would add some raised metal strips onto the tread to add grip. Here are a few balustrade ideas: I had to add this one in, its fun !!! The colours could be added with a rubber flooring material, lots of grip and will soften the edges. As the kids get older you can carpet over for a more contemporary look. hi the design of the handrail will cost as it will require a flat bar to be fixed with the same pitch as the stairs. if you have a straight run stairs it will be easier to achieve. if you split the work into the timber joinery being provided by a joinery company for the new treads and then get an architectural metal worker to make the handrail you can reduce costs and avoid a markup from the stair supplier. the design is pretty easy to achieve though! best Rowland
