Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me. I've decided to get a runner, feel that's going to be best with the 3 kids running about. I'm eyes are sore looking at all the different kinds of runners so I ended up phoning the carpet man and getting him to make me a runner from same carpet that Im getting everywhere else so it's all matching. When he sends it away to get it binded, it will be done with orange thread, think this will give me a pop of colour against the grey carpet and be a little different. Takes a few weeks for it to come back but as soon as it's done and in, I will post a picture for you'd. Thanks again for your input and helping me make my mind up.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice. I only want a runner because I love the look of them and that it still allows some of the wooden 'bones' of the staircase to be displayed. Given that absolutely no-one has said "yeah - install it yourself - it's so easy!" I'm definitely feeling inclined to save up for longer and get it done professionally. I'm currently thinking of going for the wool loop carpet attached in a beige/natural colour-way and edged with a dark charcoal linen border.

Hi Marinela, There are lots of ways of doing this but the obvious issue is that it has to safe for the boys. I have enclosed a few ideas, hope this helps. None of these could be classed as the perfect solution but you can take ideas from each and miix & match. You need to consider the stair construction, the examples shown are in timber but a carpet would be softer and safer for the kids. If you do go for wood I would add some raised metal strips onto the tread to add grip. Here are a few balustrade ideas: I had to add this one in, its fun !!! The colours could be added with a rubber flooring material, lots of grip and will soften the edges. As the kids get older you can carpet over for a more contemporary look. Thank you for the recommendations however, have decided to go with the solid oak as I'm not a fan of veneer. I have also figured that the steps will level out as I'll be adding equal sized threads to each stair....I think it will work out. I think 🤔
