As we become more digital-savvy and design aware thanks to the plethora of inspiration at our fingertips, it seems that our kitchen design habits are changing too, and becoming more adventurous. “Our emboldened customers are steering away from tried-and-tested kitchen schemes and opting for more unique designs that fully reflect their personalities and the way in which they use the space,” says Laura Calimano, trend forecaster for Cosentino.
From statement worktops and splashbacks, to bold cabinetry colours and standout accessories, our kitchens are becoming the go-to room in which to freely express our individual style and quirky touches. Read on and discover what the kitchen experts are predicting will be the top trends next year. You heard it here first!

1. Dark Kitchens
Rich, sultry colours, such as forest greens and dark greys, have been big headlines in interior schemes for a few years, and now these edgy, contemporary colours have officially made their way into kitchen design. Say goodbye to crisp, clean white and light-grey kitchens inspired by pared-back Scandi style. Instead, expect to see intense blacks, deep greys, and nature-inspired greens or blues appearing on cabinetry, while earthy tones will be complemented by dark surfaces in textured finishes, for a tactile feel. Not ready to go the whole hog? Add lighter accents with a crisp, white stone splashback or warm wooden floors.

2. The “Anti-kitchen”
The popularity of open-plan living will see cabinetry having a more freestanding furniture feel, in order to blend with the rest of the living space. Unexpected accessories, not usually seen in kitchens, will also help to blur and soften the boundaries between the working, cooking and relaxing zones for a more seamless flow. Think tall wall mirrors, bold artwork, decorative lighting and flowing curtains (in washable fabrics).
3. Marbled Surfaces
Beautifully graceful and utterly elegant, it’s no surprise that the desire to showcase surfaces that emulate luxe-looking marble is still as popular as ever. This timeless pattern will add instant depth and interest to any space, while 2020 will see a trend towards dark hues, bringing a new dimension of edginess to this classic look.
4. Beautiful Brass
A firm favourite for a while, brass is set to continue as the modern metallic that adds instant warmth and charm to kitchens. Consider it for tapware and handles to liven up dark cabinetry and worktops, or simply introduce it through accessories like lighting, serving dishes and bar stool legs.

5. Slim Surfaces
Not only offering a sleek and streamlined finish, slim worktops and cladding for cabinetry is a uniquely clever option for creating a sense of space in compact kitchens. “For those living in urban high-rises, space can be at a premium,” says Laura. “Opting for thinner surfaces works in the same way as opting for a lighter colour scheme and smaller furnishings – it can trick the eye into seeing the room as being more spacious and airy.”

6. Big Islands
As more of us are renovating and expanding our kitchens to incorporate open-plan layouts, the kitchen island is becoming the central feature of this space, and as a result, they are being super-sized to meet a number of tasks. As well as adding extra worktop, storage and dining space, islands are now incorporating lifestyle elements, such as open shelves and wine fridges, which can be accessed from the living area. “The UK is leading the way in using the kitchen for tasks other than food preparation and eating,” says Laura. “In line with this, we are not surprised that there is a demand for larger kitchen islands to provide a bigger, usable workspace for tasks such as working from home or children’s craft projects.”
7. Take the Splashback Higher
Loving the beauty and elegance of your chosen splashback? Then why not extend it up the wall behind your hob to heighten the drama? Not only will you create a statement, but you’ll have a practical surface that can be wiped down easily.

8. Waterfall Islands
Want a smart and dramatic finish to your island? Then wrap your island with worktop at both ends and you’ll neatly conceal the sides of any cabinetry below, as well as adding a practical element that can cleaned in a breeze. And, if you opt for a waterfall worktop design with thick marble veining, the extra pattern at each end will add enough interest to the space that you won’t need pattern elsewhere.
9. Industrial Notes
The popularity of industrial style in kitchens lies in its relaxed laidback tendency, where anything goes. Raw natural textures can be mixed with smooth, slick surfaces, while colours can either be rich and dark, or bright and vibrant – it’s up to you!
However, if you’re worried about your look dating, then timeless grey cabinetry is a good bet. “Grey perfectly lends itself towards industrial designs, particularly when combined with raw textures, such as concrete and weathered metal, and a mix of metallics and glass for a layered look that will feel authentic,” says Laura.

10. A Touch of Timber
Wood is known for its tactile cosiness and visual warmth, so introducing a touch of timber into any kitchen will instantly create a welcoming feel. However, when using wood, always consider the practicalities, as it can be high maintenance in wet or hot areas. Use it for the eating areas and for decorative details only, opting for hardwearing surfaces that are highly resistant to scratches, staining and heat for the cooking and food prep zones instead. Here, light grain wood accents are teamed with a robust marble worktop with speckles of shimmering gold to combine form and function.

Fine for the small percentage that can say ‘ all change now- back to black’
We are so excited about all these trends. We have just designed our new studio display and we are happy to see that we have captured lots of these styles.
I would love the kitchen companies that I have seen to read this article, they seem hell bent on giving you the standard kitchen and I have to argue that’s not what I want. I had a kitchen “specialist” looking at me when I said I wanted wooden shelving and low profile as if I didn’t know what I was talking about. It’s just very frustrating!
