Minibar. The minibar takes the couple’s entertaining abilities to the next level, designer Karen Nepacena says. And because it’s such an important part of the remodeled kitchen, she wanted to make it pop. “Tile is one of my favorite materials to make a space unique,” she says.She knew the clients didn’t fear the bold, so she chose this handmade pattern that meshed well with the old-feel tone of the rest of the house. They had considered using more of the tile, but in the end, limiting the tile usage saved money and made the minibar stand out.Pro tip: This tile is not for someone in a rush, because each piece is made by hand, Nepacena says. The tile took six weeks to be made and a couple of days to be installed. “It takes a lot of trial and error to make these tiles fit seamlessly,” she says, because each piece is unique. After. With the half walls and kitchen wall removed, the house opened up. A fresh coat of white paint, including over a brick wall that was exposed during the demolition of the previous space, enhances the home’s natural light. Ferrarini chose to paint the brick because it wasn’t in great shape and he thought having such a large amount of exposed red brick would overwhelm the tight space and constrain the color palette used in the furnishings. “White toned it down, so visually it’s just a little treat on the eyes versus being the main attraction,” he says. An herb garden and new copper pipes pop against the crisp, textured brick wall. Here, the previous recipe gets tweaked to include the popular white engineered quartz countertops mentioned in the survey, white walls instead of gray and a paneled refrigerator to tone down the steel. The designer amped up what could have been a monochrome space by introducing glamorous brass finishes in the cabinet hardware, faucet, range detailing and light fixture. Kitchen. The slatted doors shown in the dining room photo lead to the kitchen. Storage space was at a premium in here, and the existing upper cabinets were low and close to the countertops. The designers raised the upper cabinets to allow for more workspace and added another layer of flip-up cabinets atop the upper cabinets. Undercabinet lighting illuminates the work surfaces. With the designers’ help, the couple planned shelf sizes inside by looking at their needs. For example, they keep their herbs and spices in the upper cabinet to the left of the range. They are big coffee and tea drinkers and the shelves to the left house their pottery collection, which they use on a daily basis.
