These small yet distinctive updates will not only elevate your property’s resale potential and attract prospective buyers, they will also improve your quality of life, ensuring you and your family enjoy your home even more. Here, we ask interior design experts My Bespoke Room to pinpoint four simple yet impactful upgrades that will have buyers queuing at the door.
1. Refresh walls and surfaces
- Paint! It’s your secret weapon for instantly transforming a space without spending a fortune or digging out the tool box.
- A bold, stand-out paint colour, such as a deep-sea green, can inject drama into plain rooms, brighten up dark spaces and add a focal point to areas that are lacking any features. Specialist paint can also be used to update tired kitchen cabinets that have seen better days. Just be sure to use a specific kitchen cupboard paint that is robust and scratch resistant.
By working with an interior designer like My Bespoke Room, you can unleash your home’s potential and deliver a design statement that makes it stand out from the crowd. Your carefully allocated interior designer will guide you through colour concepts to achieve the look and feel you’re after, and ensure the schemes work with any existing furniture or features.
Bonus tip: Treat the ceiling as the fifth wall and decorate it with an eye-catching colour to bring attention to architectural features or make the walls feel taller. This decorating technique can also help define separate areas in an open-plan room, such as only painting the ceiling area above the dining or living area.
2. Illuminate your spaces effectively
Lighting is incredibly important for creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere, and encouraging potential buyers to fall head over heels for your property. What’s more, chic lighting can convey a high-end feel. Swap outdated light fittings with elegant shades or pendants for an instant injection of sophistication.
Another brilliant yet easy trick is to add wall lights above bedside tables to provide the ideal reading light and a gentle bedtime glow – consider plug-in wall lamps if you are retrofitting.
My Bespoke Room can help solve all kinds of lighting conundrums, from sourcing the perfect pendants for tricky spaces like bathrooms, to finding the right size lamps to enhance dark corners. Their layered lighting layouts will get the very best out of every space.
Bonus point: Add picture wall lights to illuminate artwork and you’ll add a sense of high-end luxury to your spaces.

3. Curate impactful art displays
Got a problematic space that’s crying out for an interesting feature? Artwork can fill any empty wall with a hint of colour, captivating image or contemporary typography. Positioned well, art can catch your eye and draw your attention to areas of a room that might be overlooked, or draw your eyes through the house and into other rooms.
Choosing the right artwork can be challenging, but by working with an interior designer, you’re hiring years of experience to source unique pieces that suit your budget and your home. And if you were thinking you couldn’t afford an interior designer, think again. My Bespoke Room is an incredibly affordable option at only £395 per room, offering a great investment when you consider how much value their expertise can add to your home.
Bonus tip: Mirrors are another useful decorating detail used by interior designers. They can add interest to walls and help expand the sense of space in small rooms by bouncing light around, tricking the eye into thinking there’s hidden depth to an area.

4. Use rugs to update flooring
Rugs and runners are ideal for covering up tired floors, from tiles to wooden flooring, stained carpets to bare staircases. Be sure to choose the right type of rug for the room, such as soft and sumptuous designs for bedrooms and lounges, while low-pile runners work well in high traffic areas, like hallways, as well as old tiled floors in kitchens (always pop a rug gripper underneath to avoid it slipping).
Not only can My Bespoke Room help source the ideal rugs and runners for your needs, budget and style, their expertise and knowledge can help build a coherent look throughout your home.
Bonus tip: By clearing clutter and curating unique displays, you can inject your home with character and personality that will attract buyers.

it's the same teal blue again! surely there are other colours in the spectrum?
It's going to cost to add wall lights to illuminate pictures, the electricians bill, floor boards removed upstairs to get to wires, then chisel out walls, put in wire for the lighting, fill in and rub down then paint. I don't think I'd go to all that trouble.
