They say our windows are the eyes to our homes, giving passers-by an insight into what lies behind them, and allowing us an outside view. With that in mind, it’s safe to say that giving your windows a smart appearance can improve the overall look of your house, both inside and out – and you can’t get much smarter than shutters, with their seamless fit and flexible design.
It’s not only the aesthetics that shutters are good for though… louvered shutters can be titled at an angle in order to filter light or block it out completely, while solid panel designs create a neat solution to high windows and doors. With so many styles available, there’s a design for every home out there too, and although they can be an outlay to begin with, they make a good investment that generally proves cost effective in the long run.
We spoke to experts Thomas Sanderson about why shutters should be your window furnishing of choice and what a bespoke service actually offers. Read on to find out more…

1. Whatever the Shape, There’s a Shutter to Fit
We all know that shutters offer that extra touch of luxury, but it’s a common misconception that you can only have them fitted to square or rectangular windows. You’ll be pleased to know that that’s not the case and whether you have a curved bay window design, bi-folds or even French doors, anything is possible.
For awkward window shapes, consult a professional bespoke service to ensure your shutters designs are custom-made to fit whatever weird and wonderful window shapes your home may have, for a seamless finish.
So, what does a bespoke service actually entail? Well, to start with you’ll have a consultation with a local designer, who will come to your home and help you choose from colour samples and various shutter styles to make sure you’re happy with your choice. Then it’s over to the experts who will handcraft your chosen shutters to your exact specifications, before they are fitted by a team of professionals. Then, all that’s left is for you to enjoy them!

2. There’s No Room They Won’t Suit
Convinced that shutters will make your room too dark or won’t be the best choice for your kitchen where heat is a factor? We can assure you that no matter which room you’re in need of a window furnishing for, there’s a shutter design to suit them all.
From classic, solid panel designs that cover your entire window while still allowing you to open the parts you need, to vinyl options that make a more durable choice for bathrooms and kitchens, you’ll find there’s a wide variety of shutter styles available – which is great as it means you can choose the perfect design to suit your room and your lifestyle.
Bonus tip: Worried a tricky shaped window, like the one shown above, would put an end to having shutters? Think again – bespoke shaped designs make a beautiful solution, whatever angle your window.

3. You Can Use Them to Create a Focal Point
Bring your room to life by making your shutters a standout feature in their own right, and creating an instant wow factor. Simply choose a design or colour that makes an impact – the Thomas Sanderson wooden shutterspictured here come in a range of matte paint and wood stains, so why not opt for a monochrome design, as shown above, or a more colourful choice to liven up a neutral room scheme?
And, if you’re redesigning a room, why not use your shutters as the starting point, by choosing a colour to base your scheme around? Alternatively, if you’re adding shutters to an already decorated room, why not match them to your wall colour or to one of the colours in your wallpaper or furnishings for an extra stylish touch?

4. …Or Highlight an Original Feature
If you’re lucky enough to have an arched, full-height or unusually shaped window, enhance a standout feature by choosing bespoke shutters to enhance their architectural beauty.
Your unusual or unique windows may be one of the things you love most about your home, so rather than hide them away, make them the centre of attention by adding shutters to complement their shape and size. Opting for a bespoke design means that every detail is considered, from Thomas Sanderson’s unique hidden hinges to the size of the louvres, to ensure your windows are shown off to their very best.
5. They Suit a Range of Styles
From period properties to new-build homes, shutters come in many designs to ensure there is one to suit the age of your building. Older properties may benefit from solid shutters, which offer a more traditional, elegant finish, while tracked shutters are ideal for modern homes that feature bi-fold doors.

6. They Can Give You Light & Privacy
Shutters are hugely versatile and not only allow the light to come flooding into your home, while maintaining privacy but they’re also very effective at blocking all the light out completely when needed.
Think about how you use your windows as that can steer your choice when deciding on which style to choose. For example, do you have a top window that you like to open regularly? If so, tier-on-tier shutters would be ideal as they work independently of each other, allowing you to keep the lower shutter closed while having the top one open (so you can reach your window easily). Or perhaps you have sliding or folding doors to your outside space, in which case, louvred shutters will be a good match for easy access.
Café-style shutters are a great solution if you need both privacy control and light, as you can get privacy from the lower half of the window while still keeping the view above – ideal if you live on a main road or you’d prefer not to have people looking in as they walk past.

Yes of of course they look good but who does the dusting? Getting dust out of all those awkward corners. Yuk. 10 years on you will be changing them.
I disagree with Charlie, I have had shutters for two large south facing windows in my town house living room and they have remained practically dust free for 18 years +: not sure how they do it except the paint is so smooth the dust doesn't seem to gather.....
I love the shutters, they are smart and very versatile in loads of situations, for example on hot days I can open the windows and close the shutters to leave shade in the room but air circulation too, and, as a bonus I can be sure the cat won't attempt to jump from the open first floor window.
The only down side is the cost: two largish windows (not full length) costs over £1000. Good quality curtains can cost a lot too but the huge window treatments in this article probably cost an arm and a leg.
I have what would be classed as ‘normal’ windows and have shutters on several of them. They have now been in place for several years and I still love the practicality and simplicity they offer. They don’t collect much dust. An occasional wipe down with a damp cloth is all they need. They make the rooms look bigger and they look modern and yet are strangely comforting. You can open them up fully or partially to let the light in or close them in a ‘batten down the hatches’ fashion to cosy up against the elements in the dark winter evenings. If you consider the cost of decent, lined curtains, I think shutters are a better investment in the long run. I personally love them.
