Thank you so much for the generous comments!

@lilhausand @Ashley M asked about the lawn. The simple answer is it needs regular attention. We scarify and over-seed the lawn in the spring each year. We initially laid premium turf (rolls of high grade cut turf) which is grown from a mix of grass species suited to the cool and damp UK climate but not specifically formulated for shade. I've had limited success with shade mixes in the past. We over-seed with a general seed mix.

During the winter months the palms, tree ferns, ground ferns, cypresses, and bamboo retain their leaves and keep the garden green and structured. The Hakonechloa grasses turn yellow, then yellow/brown, their softly textured foliage adding welcome colour at ground level. I don't cut them back until early March, just as the new green blades are appearing. The evergreen Korean rock ferns carry their lovely lacy fronds through the winter. We wrap the Asian banana trees (Musa basjoo) in fleece to protect them from the frost. Apart from that, all the other plants in the garden are hardy enough to weather the generally mild London winters.
