Some great suggestions for creating broken-plan space. We have this on a tiny scale with an oversized doorway between the kitchen and dining room (the layout of our home doesn't really allow for anything more). With the colours from the dining room used to accent the kitchen, the two areas are connected during the day, but in the evening, with candles lit in the dining room and the kitchen lighting at a minimum, the rooms feel very separate and we have an intimate dining space away from the busy kitchen area. It works really well for us.

So excited to start building our broken plan space next spring. We have a 1/2 wall in our kitchen/diner which will be fitted with banquette seating for the dining table then some steps down to a snug then a second level change to a garden room. Some great ideas for decorating & I think I’m going to try to use paint to create a different feel in each zone. Now to decide on that colour pallet! Any ideas?

Hey Michelle, depends whether you want pzazz or gentler tones I guess. I tend to go for vibrant colour and feel that the pumpkin in the hall, the midnight blue in the bathroom, the very green green in my kitchen and charcoal grey in my sitting room do sit well together. In the bedroom I went for calm with 'cafe au lait'... or beige as it used to be known. I have an alcove in my sitting room with half of Iona beach on it... some gorgeous pebbles I collected from there years ago plus a couple of mugs that reflect the colours of this stunning isle. These are beautiful shades that work well with the charcoal grey walls and wood. Will be keeping the curtains simple... Just need to save the few £100 for them...
