70s here and 37% humidity = no flies.
Our weatherman calls it ”Sweatember”.
I enjoyed some nice beach weather this weekend, with an onshore breeze keeping the sweat down. I cut the long weekend short as my wife gets ready to leave for 1.5 months tomorrow, I wanted to visit my mom at rehab, etc. I’m sorry to see summer leave us but I really enjoy all our distinct seasons so there’s always something to look forward to in that regard. But I’ve got a bunch of uncertainty in life, and I’m a little overwhelmed thinking about where things will land and how I’ll manage getting there, so that’s more on my mind than pumpkin spice lattes right now.
Here in rural Missouri, we are desperate for cooler weather and rain. The past 7-9 days we have had temperatures at 95+ every day, very unusual for our part of the world. And no measurable rain for 2.5 weeks.
Last night we had a teaser rain of 5/100” and this morning the temp has dropped down to the 70s. Heavy rains to the north of us in Iowa and also to the south in Kansas City so we are crossing our fingers for another sprinkle of rain today.
It seems there has been a heat lamp and an umbrella over us for months.
During class one day, a teacher trying to teach good manners asked her students the following question: "Joe, if you were on a date having dinner with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom?"
Joe said, "Just a minute, I have to go pee."
The teacher responded, "That would be rude and impolite."
"What about you, Mark? How would you say it?"
Mark said, "I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom. I'll be right back."
"That's better," said the teacher, "but it's still not very nice to say the word 'bathroom' at the dinner table."
"And you, Little Johnny... can you use your brain for once and show us your good manners?"
Johnny said, "Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce to you after dinner."
The teacher fainted.
Just finished a book by Kinberly McCreight, Someone Else's Husband, and now reading Like Mother Like Daughter. Both are suspenseful and thought provoking. Too fast of a read to drag out with a book club.
Rules of Civility by Amor Townes, because I liked A Gentleman in Moscow so much. So far, I love it.
Am working through Night Soldiers by Alan Hurst an eastern European oriented spy story, pre- and during WWII. Not my usual genre but it’s a book club book. There’s a murder at the opening which caused one member to put the book down but it’s not an especially gruesome book (way less than Cormac McCarthy). It does feel like a big book— I’ve still got a chunk of reading ahead but I do feel this is a quality read and do recommend it.

There are so many reels of interviews of him, now that he is gone. I have been watching them all. That quirky smile of his gets me. Like he knows more than he's telling. So delightful. I never knew he was in criminal minds. Will have to look that up and watch them all.
His reading of A Christmas Carol is my favorite. He had such a distinct voice and expressive talent.
bpath Both my kids when they were teens were very much into Rocky Horror in the early to mid nineties. They belonged to a local cast. DD played Janet for several years and DS did lighting ,tech ,and security. I just looked it up and a couple of the casts are still active today in San Francisco. In fact, DD was voted best Janet at Rocky Con in Vegas one year. There will probably be a lot of tribute performances around now that Tim Curry has passed.
Years ago we had a miniature dachshund. You could look at him and smile showing your teeth and say ”smile Benjie” and he would show his teeth back. No growling, just smiling.
My little pooch has to bring a toy with him when he goes to bed. Every night, when he sees I am getting ready to go to bed, he picks out a favored toy and brings it to bed with him. He'll play with it or chew on it for few minutes and then he goes to sleep. He does this without fail every single night!
All of our cats make us laugh to no end. Bruno was the smartest of the bunch. He was a feral we fed outdoors. Every night he (and others) came to the porch for supper. One night he came inside when we opened the door to put food out. Rather than run to get his supper, he pranced into the house and asked for some love. After a few minutes of petting, we put him outside and told him to go eat. He did the same thing the next evening and the evening after that. He wanted love more than food. We made a new rule: 3 nights in a row meant he belonged in our home.
About 3 months later Bruno "talked" another feral into giving that new rule a try. Yep, it worked for Buster too.
I knew Bruno was the smart one. I bought a clicker, brought out my 16" embroidery hoop, a handful of treats and the kitchen stool. He was a natural at jumping through the hoop. Each time he made it through I raised the hoop. That just tickled me.
Bruno was our ambassador. Whenever a newbie arrived he took them under his wing. Showed them the ropes. If we had kittens to bottle feed, other than that chore, he took the role of Mama. After we fed a kitten, he'd take them to his bed and clean their behinds. Then they'd go to sleep.
He lived inside with us from November 2016 until he said his final goodbye on May 4, 2026.
Arapaho, if my kids ever want my opinion re: mined vs lab-grown engagement rings, I will advise them to purchase lab-grown and take the money they saved and put it in their Roth IRAs, which will return more than mined diamonds. If the marriage lasts and they’re prioritizing jewelry at their 25th anniversary, then go for whatever they want.
Feeling a little better but the spots are still apparent. Still scalp soreness but no new spots I noticed. Almost done with the anti-virus drug. Thanks !
Baked into a cake. Lately I've been making that thing where you mash a very ripe banana in a coffee mug, stir in an egg and 4 T of flour; then microwave for about a minute. Kind of a mini-souffle, and it doesn't stick to the mug.
sushipup, you've had a lot of activity in this area recently. I've acted as you requested a few times but I'm embarrassed to admit that the threads have been triggering pangs in me to get some Hawaiian food. Lots of places around here to find it. It's [erhaps the unhealthiest food in the world and maybe the fat and excessive amounts of white carbs are the reason why there's so much obesity there?
I eat it rarely, and the canned item itself didn't feature in my childhood meals, but heck. Maybe it's a a guilty pleasure? My arteries can take it once every 5 years that I decide to have some.

Yes, they really are good. We have a California bay tree but long ago I discovered the leaves are much too strong. The much more subtle Mediterranean (Turkish?) ones from the grocery store are best.
