I am sorry to report that this plant died. And when I pulled it out to look at the roots, they were all black - so maybe it was a root problem all along, and the pests were just the symptom.

I really need to get in the habit of checking the roots before I do anything else. This isn't the first plant that has done a nosedive like this. It's upsetting.

Still, now it means I get to shop for a new rose.

Need, That sounds like an overwatered rose that the roots rotted, or roots that cooked to death in the heat.

Pardon me for butting in here ... I mostly lurk, here in the Roses. I am curious, what sort of zone do you live in, Tree? Bc I too am in search of fragrant roses. (I didn't even know rugosas were fragrant ... )

Roseraie de l'Hay is so much better. Now I'll shut up.

I got 'Rose à Parfum de l'Hay' from Pickering 28 years ago and grew it for about 4 years before unceremoniously and without hesitation, removing it from my garden. It grew reasonably well and the blooms were beautiful and quite fragrant, but I have never seen a rose so crippled by Rust as this one was. Oh, I'm sure there are locations where Rust isn't going to be a problem and this rose might thrive and make an admirable specimen, but that clearly wasn't going to happen here in the PNW.

As Sheila states, 'Roseraie de l'Hay' is a much better rose in every way. And yes — these are two distinct varieties and should not be confused.
