Paint the units!

It depends if you have any budget at all! There are a number of companies that supply and fit doors, drawer fronts, plinths etc. This is a cheaper option than a full refurb. Adding new tops can also change the look without massive expense. Retiled floors and splas gacks can also change the complete look of the kitchen.

Painting the units and changing the handles could help to achieve the country kitchen look you are hoping for; I think skimming the ceiling to cover the artex effect would also help. Other changes you may want to consider might include the lighting (change overhead lights) and the window treatment / curtain fabric. Best of luck!

Definately paint the units!! I've just used Ronseal kitchen unit paint. Great stuff, goes rock hard and dries really quickly!! Good luck!

Get rid of the artex. Causes shadows and always look dirty / dull . Painting shouldn't be a problem we use dulux your Decorater should be able to help you . You could put Karndean over the tiles to lift the floor

We love these units and you can create a cosy country feel with little effort at all. Firstly, we'd paint the table top and the chairs a lovely crisp white, blinds/curtains that are a gentle mint, with a little floral pattern and change the door handles to a brighter colour, or bright white, to freshen up the whole unit and room. Then add little pastel furnishing, wicker baskets/fruit bowl. Take this image/table from Next for inspiration

With regard to changing the doors. Will they match the carcass , cornice , etc? and if the original carcasses are out of square the new doors will not line up !

Paint the units. Make good any cracks in the doors, remove the handles, fill holes with filler if you are changing the style, clean units with sugar soap and then set about painting. Use a mini roller and paintbrush for best results. Sand, prime, sand, undercoat, sand and topcoat. You may need more than one topcoat. It will be time consuming but well worth the effort and it shouldn't cost a great deal. Choose a nice handle/knob. You will be surprised at the difference it will make.

I would also paint the table legs to match the units.

Remove shades on ceiling and replace with recessed spots to take the eye away from the artexed ceiling.

Lovely Space you have!

I agree with the above comments, I would remove the cooker hood covering, as this dates the kitchen a little and replace it with a new extractor fan. If you go with a stainless steel hood like the one attached below will make it feel a bit more modern.
Also I would paint the kitchen an off white or cream colour to keep the warmth of the overall room. Adding some feature lights where you have the table, something more modern like a hanging pendant will add a focus point and give off some lovely light when on.
It might be a good idea to change the table and chairs to a more modern table and chair set, this will also help to update the overall feeling of the room.

Hi, great space you have to play with there. With limited budget i would agree with the others and suggest painting the doors, something to contrast with the worktops, keeping the country style.

The colour of the units are fine though I do like the cream-grey above. I think changing the flooring would make the biggest difference and less hassle of cleaning, sanding, priming and painting every door, drawer and side. A buff limestone or yorkstone would work and make it look more modern: there are some very good and realistic alternatives for lean budgets.

What a wonderful space! I'd definitely agree with previous comments that the cooker hood dates the room, so if you can afford it, I'd make that a priority. And as Sven & a couple of other commenters have mentioned, making a change to the walls and floors could make a big difference (see photo), on a fairly modest budget and because of the choice and options you have, would put your own touch to the room. The units are great though, and the table and chairs work well with them :)

Vinyl is probably the easiest way to change the floor quickly and relatively cheaply. Some amazing ones that do wood effect- they even have the texture of wood when you touch them!
