What concerns me about buying furniture on-line is that I can't try it out to see if it is comfortable and if it fits me , which for me is a crucial quality in furniture (I'm taller, shorter chairs aren't a good fit). I also don't like not being able to assess the quality. I'm not a big fan of on-line furniture retailers for that reason and probably would not use one. So research the market, and especially the price point at which people will buy on-line. I suspect younger people are more apt to buy furniture that is reasonably priced on-line. Include all measurements (including seat height on chairs) and have a review/comment section so people can see how the folks who have bought furniture like both quality and the delivery service.

I have always been attracted to the Carmel-by-the-Sea houses designed by Comstock...the interiors are often decorated casually, with comfy sofas, chairs, maple & cherry furniture and nature-inspired art and accessories. Big fantasy. In real life, we are retired on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and live in a 1200 sq.ft. condo one block off a large town's Main St. and two miles from any beach. Except for the building and location, we have the rest...not sure if our decor is English casual, English coastal or ???, but I wouldn't change it, except to buy better quality sofa and chairs.

The lack of bench space, and I'm not sure which category of the poll that fits into. Layout maybe, since we'll need to move things around to make it work. Our kitchen is enormous, but it's all storage - one whole wall is floor to ceiling pantry-style cabinets. On the other all the stovetop and the sink take up a full half of the bench top, so there is just enough room for one chopping board and bowl on what's left when you are cooking. The crazy thing is, it's not even a tiny galley kitchen, but the space in between the two walls is only just big enough to squeeze an island in, so we are trying to decide between being cramped, or knocking down walls and completely remodelling. Can't quite bring ourselves to pull the trigger on the latter, though, as all the cabinets and cupboard are in great shape.

unstarted It's a small concrete area, the walls are a nice feature, the plan is to dig most of the concrete out and put flagstones down (although I am wondering about trying the printed overlay) and get more planters. It all has to wait as it is currently a temporary parking area.

More flowers through the year. Need to get more bulbs in for spring and come May the garden is amazing but need more flowering plants for autumn and winter. Any suggestions? Garden is South and west facing (L shaped)

I would love to see ideas that the British have come up with to hide the 3 bins the council ask us to store in our gardens as they are so incredibly big and ugly! We have a grey bin for food and general household waste, a green bin for grass-cuttings and other garden waste and a brown bin for cardboard. Buying a shed type storage doesn't look easy on the eye. Has anyone come up with ideas that allow the bins to look camouflaged?

Hey I love my bins! Not! But if you lived here in the east midlands those 3 bins used to be 2 boxes, one orange and one yellow along with 2 large plastic bags again one orange and one blue. And you took your own garden waste to the tip. At least the multi coloured bins line up and you don't chase them down the garden in even the smallest gust. That said, this years potatoes are coming on nicely planted in that old orange tub! Could be worse mind you, I used to live in the South East and I notice their bins have moved to the pavement and shared between neighbours on an industrial scale. Meanwhile, I have constructed a bit of a barrier round the bins using old tree branches fallen/chopped in my garden, I'm not saying how long it will last....very environmental or what.

Next step ... get a garden! I love my flat but it has no garden so after being here for over 16 years I am looking forward to buying a house with a garden, some luscious trees, room to lounge on the grass, have a BBQ and have friends over, and grow some of my own herbs and vegetables ... maybe even plant an olive tree.

I have a tree with a preservation order on it and it sucks the life out of my lawn and I can't plant anything near it because of the root system... Already had the grass relaid but it was dead within months!! Raised beds? Fake grass?

A frog deterrent! I'm terrified of them and my garden is turning into a jungle as I'm too scared to disturb anything for fear of what might jump out at me. I should add that a small steam runs at the bottom and our lawn is alive with legally hundreds of the slimy little hoppers

Hi annetteep24, you could try laying small pale tan chippings around your tree and then pop a white wooden garden armchair underneath. In the summer you could add a cushion to the chair, put flower pots around and have a little white garden table to put your book and a nice cup of tea on. You could even add a little hanging bird-house. I think if the tree is sucking all the water away from your lawn you are best to work with what nature is doing and use the space differently, as above x

annetteep24 I was thinking similar to jan0601 ... go with what you have, less stressful. What about a tree seat with plants inside it? See photo. There are plants that prefer shade so ask for these specifically.

Be careful on your choice of bamboo for your screen. Moved into our place in September & have just finished removing a 10 x 5 metre 'screen' of bamboo from our garden which was invading everywhere. Apparently it was planted as a small clump 13 years ago. Ended up hiring a mini digger for 2 days to get the root mass up. No doubt more will spring up from somewhere!

Hi tamp75, thank you for taking the trouble to warn me. I had an idea bamboo was invasive, much like Russian Vine. Very hard to control!!

Hi paulineewilson, to add more interest, you could possible consider lifting a paving slab here and there that won't compromise the main areas you would walk on regularly. Where you've chosen to lift a slab, you could add some fragrant plants such as lavender or herbs that tolerate being trodden on occasionally. The spare slab you've lifted could then be placed further away from your house to create another planting square. into this you could plant one of those tall pencil-thin Italian evergreen trees. Your patio would gain more 3D interest if you used a few plants that are tall and narrow and evergreen. Tall evergreens provide shade in summer and winter interest. I would check with your garden centre the distance you should plant these Italian evergreens trees cannot damage buildings or drains with roots. I'd also perhaps consider making the table area of your patio a curved semi-circle shape rather than have 90 degree angles. I am sure you will enjoy tweaking your patio as the basic design is lovely!
