Brainstorming ideas for renovation/decoration.

Kitchen is narrow with no windows. Like Scandinavian minimalist style and hidden storage. Been thinking of installing a mirror at the far wall but that could also be valuable cupboard space.

Yes use the end space for storage/cupboard. I would put a run of anything reflective all around the walls in the space between the counter top and wall cupboards and fit lighting all around there too, either mini hanging lamps or down-lighters. Small kick board lights would be good too.

We were confronted with similar limitations on a project last year. We achieved a layout which I believe optimises the space available. The distance between the kitchen units was 85-90cm. Please see project here. I believe the key area to address with a small kitchen are: storage - favour drawers opposed to doors and explore which internal storage solutions suit your needs lighting - ensure all areas of the kitchen are well-lit worksurface - provide as large an area as possible; induction hobs and undercount sinks with integrated drainer grooves help handleless door/drawer fronts - if a modern kitchen, I'd suggest going for handleless to avoid catching plinth - repeat the same flooring material as plinth to give the illusion that the base units are floating gaps - avoid; build in units wherever possible - cleaning within the tight space will otherwise be cumbersome

Hi franparmenter, there are lots of things you can do! For example, changing the depths and heights of cabinetry can make the kitchen storage bigger or reduce the depth and height to give more free space in a small kitchen. With so many options in sizes now available you’re no longer constrained by one single size. Pocket doors, which slide back into the unit, either as a bi-fold option or a whole option, allow easy access to units but without imposing on floor space. Use mirrors and reflective surfaces to maximise light. Go for integrated appliances to streamline the look. I totally understand that. I just finalised a project for a client that had a very narrow and long kitchen, we used a narrow storage wall for this and it worked beautifully. Have you thought about using the space for cupboards and mounting mirrors on the cupboard doors?

Hi. I'm a little unsure whether you're looking to fit a new kitchen or not? I also can't expand the pic so it's a little difficult to work everything out. If you're looking to do a "cheap" update I think you can easily achieve a scandi style by just updating the floor and wall tiles with maybe a couple of accessories. I'd leave the walls white but maybe consider having the end wall with the pans in a brick effect wallpaper. If you opt for red brick it will bring the room in which could work if the room is really long. A pendant light may look good but it doesn't look as if the ceiling is that high? Is the cabinet over the hob cream as all the rest look white? Wood obviously works with scandi style but if you wanted the shelves to disappear than paint them white too.

Hi. You could use the end bit for cupboard storage, and use glass doors in stead, even place some LED lighting inside? See photo's attached for an idea

Minnie101: the kitchen is current rather crammed and I haven't decided how much work to do. My main goal is to make it more spacious and secondly practical with good storage, good surface areas to work on etc. Don't have any better photos but here's a layout of the flat.

Is it maybe worth taking out the kitchen walls and having open plan living/dining kitchen. Just run the kitchen down one wall all the way along?

Thanks for clarifying. I think it really depends on how much storage you need. You can replace the shelves with storage and put a cupboard at the end but I'm not sure where you'll get extra prep area from. Mirrors are a good idea but will obviously just give a feeling of space. I would weigh up the costs of additional cabinetry but it may be worth considering extending the kitchen into the living area.

it might help if you opened the entrance into the hallway and closed the current entrance and made it U shape .

Then you could even steal some lounge space ( about 70/80cm ) and make a Pantry on that end !

I once used a big piece of mirror instead of a glass splashback for the space between the worktop and the eye-level cupboards - that makes a huge difference and its fairly cheap - just go to a glass cutting place to get it.

In my opinion you take down the wall between the lounge and kitchen and fit the kitchen in an Lshape extending into the dining area.

I think your dilemma of thinking the kitchen is narrow, is the muddle of pots and pans at the end, and the open shelves. These give the impression of the kitchen being closed in. The pans at the end could easily be housed in a slim floor to ceiling cupboard, and the items on the shelf housed in one closed in cupboard. This would give you more empty space on the wall. However if you want to really give it the WOW factor, knock the small wall down beside the reception room, and embrace the kitchen into this room, giving you lots of space in both rooms. You could then extend the kitchen along the outside wall.

If you only have tall / wall units on one wall it will feel more spacious you can get away with an extractor with glass in the open wall

Hello,

You could mount mirror to cupboard doors and this way you would have both you wanted to have.

Remember that there is no project that can't be achieved and with a great design you can have what you desired for!

Light installation would also help but in my opinion mirror would look amazing, combined together with your contemporary style Kitchen.
