Help for my tiny bathroom?

Just purchased my first house, the bathroom is very small, long but narrow
I have decided to re tile the back and right wall floor to ceiling, but wanted advice on colours, flooring, tiles & even layout of the bathroom to make it bright and bigger
I am thinking of using a mosaic tile border
As the window is over the end of the bath and I am worrying the shower may cause the window sill to become damp
The door literally takes you straight into the bathroom there is no wall around it.
Appreciate any advice :)

Wow, that is quite narrow so you will need to accentuate the bathroom horizontally to detract from it. Metro tiles would work well as they are horizontally orientated, a border in a darker colour about half-way up would highlight the width.

Can you put down a new floor? A bathroom laminate with the planks going left to right would help accentuate width also. Should be cheap as its not a huge space.

Is that a radiator cover on the left? I would lose it, it take up valuable floor space. I would suggest a massive mirror on that wall, as big as you can to give the illusion of space.

A window blind such as a Venetian would again help bring out the width rather than the height of this room.

I'd keep everything as light as possible and with a gloss finish to bounce light around.

Agree with you on the window, hardly ideally placed but all you need to do is get a shower curtain rail that goes around the entire bath i.e. three sides so you can curtain it off when you shower and keep it dry.

Do you have the budget to move the fittings?

If so you could swap the bath and basin round which would also resolve the window/shower issue. Though perhaps not enough room for the bath there....?

Hello Tom, There are many Bathrooms out there that are smaller than yours. You are right, you could definitely add something to it, redesign it and make it look bigger. Everything is possible! If I was you I would not remove the bath. Just as others said some people may feel more attracted to have a bath and not a shower only. After all you can still ad a showered and have 2 in 1. When you add a mirror and pick light colours you can definitely make your Bathroom look more spacious. Light installation is also a great idea to make your space look bigger. Have you considered changing the layout for your Bathroom? Good luck with your Project!

I think that one of the problems with this small bathroom is that it's broken into many elements, making the space appear even smaller. The slope is very sculptural but spoiled by the style of window. Would you consider replacing the window with a full pane of glass in a casement or awning style opening? I'd also recommend either removing the tongue and groove boarding and skimming the wall or replacing the boards with T & G that extend from the floor to the ceiling. I'd remove the tiles and replace with T & G as well. Also, to unify the space, remove the ceiling tiles, which look like polystyrene, and the coving to simplify the overall appearance. A paler tint of the blue-green and a simpler window film in a foggy texture will allow more light to enter the room.

Hi You need to check re soil pipe - my opinion is that it is best to keep the WC as close to the soil pipe as possible to avoid unnecessary problems. Dear Charlotte, the best option to buy shower pan and rail with a curtains , or to build one, instead of the bathtub. Here just examples , what to look for. The shower head it in the highest position now, its means if we take bath out we have more height to the floor. I have same made at home if you be interested I will add my shower pictures. Here last one is example, easy to build separation wall somewhere 3-5 cm, with a good drainage and no problem water from shower moves fast. The best wishes .

Is there room to swap the loo and basin around so your first view isn't of the loo? Keep as much floor visible as possible, so wall hung vanity, towel rail higher on the wall. Large tiles should make it feel bigger as there's less grout lines so it doesn't look busy. Go for a light colour with same colour grout. Glossy ones may help reflect the light. Is there room to swap the shower end in the bath? If so, i would go for a clear shower screen. If not maybe a clear shower curtain?! Definitely a large mirror

I was going to suggest same as minnie but it would be hard to get the soil pipe behind the bath unless it was taken out and then re-fitted. But it does look much nicer not to be greeted by the loo.
Another option is to move the loo side-on in front of the window, put the basin in front of the loo on the same wall and then have the bath and shower on the opposite wall with the shower fixed on the wall to the right of the door (avoiding the window).

I made the mistake of taking out the bath in a similarly sized bathroom (at request of my tenant) and have been kicking myself ever since as it makes the house less saleable for families. Moving the fixtures can be a costly process. Look for a showering bath with a curve at the non shower end. Replace your loo with one with a vanity unit behind but keep in the same place. Look for a compact sink with a cupboard below it. In place of your radiator, look for a heated towel rail. All these things will freshen up the space, but without moving your fittings around, you can stay within budget and make the most of your space

Large mirror would help to give illusion of bigger room. I would replace the boxed in radiator with a heated towel rail .

You should definitely use light colours to decorate your Bathroom. Why not use white metro tiles? The borders could be done with mosaic tiles, just as you mentioned. That would also give a depth to your space.

Perhaps you could change the sink for a smaller one?

Hi,

Our bathroom was very simulator this and we hated the lack of floor space. We installed a gorgeous shower across the window wall and tiled around the window to protect it from moisture. It's been great so far. Then we moved the toilet to behind the door and put in a smaller countertop sink next to it. We also had the problem of working around the airing cupboard.

Taking out the bath was controversial but it hasn't bothered us yet& it's better than walking straight into the bath when you open the door like we used to. We felt that a good quality shower would make the house more saleable in future that a pokey bathroom.

I do think a shower room would work better here as it is too cramped with a bath. But many people are reluctant to take out a bath, its a very personal thing...

IKEA do some great slimline sinks. I have the one below although I didn't bother installing the faux dark 'feet' as the unit is actually wall mounted. Also, note that the storage area beneath is less capacious than it seems. It is great in a small space!

For the rest, I'd investigate getting rid of the radiator altogether. It takes up a good chunk of space and there's no reason why you couldn't get one that's wall mounted in a less intrusive position. Or do without if you get underfloor heating put in?

What's the door like? Only asking because if you can put in a folding door or pocket door it can make it feel less cramped when you're walking in.

Everyone's probably right about the metro tiles but personally I hate them! They remind me of public toilets... but each to their own. I think it's really important to resist the temptation to get small tiles - if just makes the place feel more claustrophobic to me. Also agree with some of the others that you can get great small bathroom fittings now - trying to work out layout of my very narrow ensuite and some of the modern sinks are really good.

I'd suggest turning the tub/shower to the wall along the wall with the window, which should maximize the space for the sink. You'd then have a more appropriate amount of space for the toilet to be situated next to the pedestal sink. Congrats on the home purchase, btw! :)
