the family bathroom is a bit tired now. it feels cluttered. the dilemma is: do we replace like for like is bath and separate shower or do we rip everything out and put a shower over bath?
separate shower or over bath? which is better?

Hello. You may find elements of these different layouts useful for your space; all
these bathrooms are about 2m square or smaller and in two cases the window is similarly placed to yours. It sounds like you've decided to keep a bath of some sort, and that is right for a family home. The freestanding model in the first image below is 1500mm long, so shorter than usual, but it is of thinner section and slightly wider so volume is actually increased with usable, internal length similar to standard. The shower is then formed as a wet room with hinged screen to protect most of the space as shown in the second image.

In the following cases we fitted shower-baths - the first two are 1700mm long and the third is 1500mm, so you satisfy the need for a bath and the convenience of a "proper" shower. Each has underfloor heating to provide extra warmth (depending on the choice of towel warmer, this generally won't generate enough heat on its own for this size of space). By positioning the towel warmer at the end of the bath you use wall space efficiently; having a similar design in our own home, we can confirm that the towels do not get wet in this position.

There are plenty of opportunities for additional storage that you could probably reproduce: for most of these shower-bath designs we created a partition behind the shower to accommodate the plumbing, create the shampoo niche and also provide floor to ceiling storage, wide enough for toilet rolls and as deep as the niche position - this is a large capacity, which you can see more clearly in the image below - you can have open shelves or, as here, we fitted piano hinged doors with shelves behind.

You mention having the WC separate; just to note that there is usually space above a WC for more storage, as in the next image, and in the mirror cabinet above the basin.

I would ask yourself how much this room gets used.
If it is every day then make your decision on how you spend your money. If you always shower then get the best shower you can.
If this is an occasional bathroom that needs a refresh then I say get a bin bag for the clutter, change the wall colour and replace the taps and towels for a refreshed look. I think it looks ok as it is.

From the picture it looks like a relatively small space. In a space this size I would recommend shower over bath. This would then free up some space to put in some much needed functional storage. This will hide all your clutter and give you a greater feeling of space.

I think katie is right - definitely something lighter and brighter than the surrounding tiles as it doesn't look like there's any natural light in this space. Personally I would go for a pale marble - if you order a few different samples you should be able to find one that picks up on the tone in the remaining tiles.

The bathroom measures 12ft x 7ft. I have a budget of around £1,000 for this room as in the very near future we will split the second bedroom to make a smaller bedroom and separate bathroom and put this bathroom back to bedroom 3. The carpets curtains and wallpaper are definitely going. The wall at the side of the loo looks bad but it’s just peeling paper. The walls may need skimming but this can be done along with the lounge. The house is at present is a 2 bed 110 year old semi detached cottage style property so although I’m young (20) I don’t want anything too modern.

A pale pink will work nicely with the green and give a softer, warmer and more flattering light to the room than the white. Unless the rest of your house is painted white, then leaving the bathroom white will look like you've just done the undercoat and still need to paint the real colour.

the space is small, approx 2mx2m. it will be used mainly by our teenagers. they would both prefer a shower. the family is divided between keeping the same layout or a shower over bath. we have kept the toilet separate to reduce arguments between teenagers. we want to make it nice enough so that they don't use our shower room, and so that we can enjoy a relaxing bath sometimes. will start with decluttering, but it still needs to be replaced.

I see. Well, I've had a shower over the bath before and it allows plenty of room for movement. Perhaps putting in a double sink might be a good idea as well to allow teens to get ready in there at the same time.

Shower over bath, putting the bath where the shower and sink are now. It's not clear where the door is from the photo, but maybe put the vanity on the opposite wall so you can have a mirror over it not the window. Double vanity if there is room, if not, the largest the space will allow to give maximum storage.

Since this is a bathroom for relatively younger people, it's not a problem showering in the bath. I'd remove all the fixtures and run a p-shaped shower/bath from the entrance wall to the window with the wider end near the door. This should leave you a 300mm wide gap at the end for a tall storage cupboard. A new sink and vanity can fit from the open door to the window wall. This would open the room and allow easy access to the window. A large, well-lit mirror over the vanity would be great for makeup.

The tiles are nice so it would just require some additional white tiles where the bath was. The upper walls could be papered (vinyl) with a small repeat pattern- white background with aqua and perhaps yellow motif. Bright tiles in aqua and the other colour would pop in this fresh environment. Oh, don't forget an extractor to keep things fresh and mildew free.

What about a wet room? It'd mean there might be more room, as there doesn't currently look like there's room to swing a cat.

it's really good to read all the comments. A big thank you to the Pros too! I can see now that our bathroom is small, but with some clever design, it could still be very nice. Even tough, the shower over bath makes sense, we still prefer to have a separate shower. Before & After to follow...

Hello,

Have you actually thought of installing a Wet Room? Remember that everything can be achieved with the right design and don't give up on your dream Bathroom!

On the first image you can see the edge of the Bath and it's quite easy to tell that the Bathroom is not too spacious BUT it can be still transformed into a Wet Room.
