Conservatory light - please help

We have just roofed our conservatory and thought we could add a feature light to the roof. We already have 3 up lighters and 6 down lights so it is for mood lighting. We currently just have electric supply to the middle rafter.

The roof is all white with a grey limestone tiled floor. I'd be so grateful for any ideas.

Hello Gill,

It's a fantastic space and I want to suggest something with cluster lighting to highlight that amazing roof and window.... Now it's important to say at this point that you can create multiple chords from one rose- ie the one chord you have hanging... See attached image of rose with 3 pink chords... You can choose any colour chord you like and have multiple height clusters up to 5 chords which add a fabulous look with different lengths of chord.. All you do is get some ceiling hooks fixed where you want the suspensions to hang.

Fix the ceiling rose first with the required number or chords and then create a hoop and wrap the chord around with a loop length of your choice on the desired hook, with the remainder hanging with a suspension light on the end.. You can effectively design your bespoke lighting instillation... I have chosen the Fiorella by Nigel Coates.. This is a polycarbonate design that you put together and very light. Of course you can choose the suspension light of your choice, but I thought this one is a particularly fantastic choice for your room... It is available in white, smoke and gold and 2 suspension sizes.. Also table and wall lighting versions to accent. Will try to attach images to show in another post as they don't seem to want to include here! You could actually use the rafters to loop the cabling and for that I'd then suggest white cable or translucent.. The resulting look would be a linear effect and equally lovely... :))

This space looks great on the photo!

Have you considered adding pendant lamp or a chandelier? They would both look nice hanging from the roof.

I would most definitely angle some spot lights from those faces of the rafters. Shoot an amazing amount of light all round that roof space! Those rafters produce enough of an architectural interest and delight in themselves. I would normally choose a statement chandelier in this situation, but because of the rafters I would keep it simple. What a wonderful roof space!

I think it would make a lot of difference if you had outside lights highlighting plants and keep the light level very low in conservatory itself so your eye is drawn outside when you look that way. I’d be doing everything I could not to highlight the white frames of the conservatory at night. A bit like Beano said about gloss white v Matt white on sofa I would be really tempted to paint the frames Matt white. And I would be hanging plants in the conservatory itself too and positioning some soft lights to highlight plants. (Tbh if this conservatory is being used often at night I would have to paint the frames a dark green or grey or black)

Hi. I think the rafters are enough of a feature (and I love a feature light!) but as you've got the cabling in already I would go for either a single white orb light (link is cream but try grey if you can't get white) or something similar to the emporium reload light on the link or a large white dandelion. https://www.lightingcompany.co.uk/ceiling-lights-c3/pendant-lights-c8/the-david-hunt-lighting-collection-orb-cream-gyroscope-ceiling-pendant-light-p2166 I'd make sure the pendant was hung low enough so as not to detract from the rafters

Gill the space looks great. I love all the triangles and height! To balance those a bit, take advantage of the height and also and add a bit of texture and fun I love some of the ideas above. Not sure where you are but may be worth experimenting with something like this ... http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80146249/ ... it would shine light all the way around (as opposed to just downward) and make great shapes on that fabulous ceiling.

I love AJ INTERIOR STYLING LTD's ideas above, but if you are tentative maybe try the Ikea ones for a while and see how you like them ... the link is an 80cm one but they also have 55cm ones for £50 each which would look great in a cluster as suggested above. These also echo the trees outside (that can be seen from the triangle window in the photo) and bring the outside in. I would stay away from anything solid, sharp-edged or any track lighting as this would make the space quite clinical and 'functional' and it looks like it needs some texture and comfort. Remember to post 'after' photos!

You need to decide if the lighting is to highlight the rafters and the ceiling angles or if the light is the focus. If it's the light there are several good suggestions above. If you want to use light to model the architecture, consider a tension cable with several clip on spotlights like those systems used in retail lighting. The cable can run through all the triangular structures at the apex of the ceiling.

We manufactured a bespoke chandelier for a client for a similar shaped space. The design they chose was mirrored glass twists - the same principles can be applied for absolutely any design. This photo shows the whole piece (do excuse the scaffolding). They're designed and made for the space so adjustments to size and design are very simple to do.
