Where do the couches go?

Sorry in advance for the mess. Three children are off so everything is all over the place! I am really struggling on the layout of this room. The boxes need to be packed away ( we have just moved house)

Hi, it is hard as effectively you've only got one ŵall! Have you tried the small sofa in the bay so where the armchair and tv are now? Would the tv go to the right of the fire or even over the top? It would mean losing the armchair though, will it fit in a corner of the dining room? Or maybe angle the small sofa between the bay and corner of the fireplace, move the bookcase where the packing cases are and put the armchair in that other corner. Or would you consider blocking access to the dining room through that door? Will the small sofa fit on the rhs of the dining room?? You obviously can't move the table as the light is centred

If you remove the doors to your dining room, you can keep your sofas where they are, and bring the arm chair forward and center it by the bay window (but not against it). Whilst this seems counterintuitive for space, it might give a tighter cosier seating area, but more breathing space around the room. You would have to turn the armchair to watch the tv though. You could then add a small table by the bay window with a vase of flowers to draw the eye out

The style of the sofa looks like it would suit the room and be less dominant than your current sofa. The new cream cushions look lovely and I would try and find some fabric/cushions with a smaller scale of pattern as your wallpaper as a contrast and this would help bring everything together beautifully. Well, the chippies van was up the drive when I got home from work - a little unexpected. At first I thought that he was sleeping with the Mrs, but then I remembered that he needed to finish the skirting boards. He's done a cracking job - quite a few tricky internal/external corners, plus the corners not being exactly 90 degrees he was back and forth to his saw all the time. He really did a stirling job. It was 13 meters of skirting in total - which took him 4.5 hours in total (over 2 evenings) and it cost me £90. Considering I was origionally going to do it, it could well be the best £90 I've spent on this whole kitchen. I need to get a lick of paint inside the alcove that's pictured. Our little fishtank will be returning in there, but as it's out I may as well do it. When we get the bar stools, and dining room table & chairs I will update again. So: What would I change/add/remove ADD - Somewhere to hang the tea-towels. We have some on the inside of a cuboard, but they keep falling off. Maybe I need some slightly more expensive 'hangers'. The space where they could have gone we put a spice rack/draw thingie - that's probably better though. ADD - We forgot about the bin! Now we have our pedal-bin basically kicking around the kitchen. The Mrs has already filled the cupboards to maximum capacity so I'm having trouble getting an internal cupboard one past her. I think I may just fit one then deal with her later. The bin has gravitated to a semi-perminant place, but with the kids trying to be *cough* helpfull the wall is already beginning to get the odd splatter of 'stuff' where they just throw their food in the general direction of it. Last night I said 'Well, why don't we just put it in the utility room' - She shot that idea down instantly as she obviously isn't happy about the extra 4 steps that it would take to walk all-that-way into another room. Poor thing! Typical woman lol. ADD - At the start of the project I would have got the electricians to chase in another mains wire from the fusebox so that it comes out of the kitchen wall centrally to the back garden, then I would put a PIR Security Light in. I know that it's not a big job by any means, and I could, and probably will, do it myself over the coming weeks but if I could have had it without a wire on the outside of the house then that'd would have been perfect. Also, thinking about it, I would have actually got him to do it at the front of the house as well as he re-wired the whole downstairs with new fusebox etc.

Hi Nieko. Ok so I understand that you’re trying eradicate the weeds first. The whole newspaper, lasagne thingy is a process called mulching or the no dig method. It is one way of trying stop weed growth but in my experience it only provides more opportunities for weeds to grow. Putting something thick like a tarp or large sheets of cardboard over an area would work tho, no light and plants can’t grow, however it would take some months for this to work. Ok if you’re leaving it over the winter tho. Mulching is slightly different in that you’re adding things like newspaper, horse or cow poo (manure), coffee grounds are supposed to be good, straw etc. to improve the quality and texture of the soil for good plant growth. For weed killing, I know it’s back breaking but I pull up what I can by hand then use a weed killer with glysophate (I use the sachets and mix with water in a hand pump sprayer) let that get to work then it’s easier to get the rest. I wouldn’t use this method near precious plants you want to keep tho, instead use Roundup gel. Scrape up the top layer of soil and put in a compost bin or heap. After that you should be mostly weed free but put down some thick material to block the light and prevent more weeds from growing before you’re ready to do any landscaping work. Hope this helps.

Thanks I have asked the electrician and he advised me to line up with the cabinets otherwise it would look odd. Ellie its just a galley kitchen so any pendant lights would be in the way. Thank you both I have now had them installed and they look fine.

Do you have any other dining space? Just wondering if you could swop the rooms around the put your sofas in what is the current dining room, it looks lighter and easier to fit your sofas into.
