Ideas to spruce up a 1960s house
Comments (35)Ha! an idea...one of our houses, the bungalow, is up for sale with Verity Frearson estate agents in harrogate & may give you an idea of what I have done to it. Its been up for sale for 3 weeks & we have 3 buyers in waiting (with houses to sell.) Its on their website & is 18 leadhall drive. When we bought it, it had upvc doors, & caravan windows at the front for privacy. At the back it had a utility room & a warren of little rooms with small windows commanding the best views of the south facing garden. The green in the bedroom photo isn't qyite as vile as it may look in the photo. If i did it again I would probably use steel/ aluminium windows at the back. I also love just one large picture window too. the doors internally, where they are not glass double doors, are the dordogne doors from Howdens which are very reasonable & add seem to suit many styles of houses rather than the usual panelled door. Mine are painted but they can be left wooden. we have another house, a victorian town house, but this is our favourite as it is like being on holiday each morning even in winter....See Moreexterior makeover ideas for a 1960s house
Comments (13)if you are on a budget - then you really need to focus you spend on key elements that will improve the build and/or add value. so work with the tiles etc. it won't look good being different and may actually devalue. but think new front door and ideally frame is a good idea - perhaps in a hard wood. also consider the window treatments eg roller blinds or voiles etc and how they will look from the reverse eg outside. this can be an easy way to smarten the front. and yes to some simple/architectural planting. the garage door could also be toned down to blend rather than be a 'feature' so you focus on entrance...See MoreIdeas for Elevation of a Semi Detached 1960s house
Comments (30)Only my personal opinion...I would remove external shutters, look at the brickwork after this, clean if necessary. (Ideally not render due to costs to maintain). Dont worry about roof it will tone down. Personally I like a uniform look so would have internal shutters on all front facing windows (love these great summer or winter). Plant something beautiful to soften the lines....climbing wisteria always looks good properly supported. Re do driveway, invest in some substantial planters. Climbing plant needed to the right if the door as it's off centre. IF you had the money perhaps consider replacing the fencing both sides of your doorway with uniform fencing/walls (yes I know you are only responsible for one side) depending on your relationship with the neighbours. If not painting fencing facing the drive same colour. I like urban grey or tudor black to provide a dramatic backdrop to planting. (Think about co ordinating colour used on driveway). I would also put in an external light by the front door and think about what if any low level lighting you want at the front or either side of entrance depending on night time lights on the street....See MoreHelp with exterior of 1960s house
Comments (17)Thanks for asking my opinion. For what it’s worth I don’t think the porch or the grey windows suit this house. I don’t mind the casement window style but think a pale or white window colour contrasts better with the dark brick. I still think the drive and adding a pitched roof to the extension will make the biggest difference. I think choosing a window style is difficult but something too fancy sits uncomfortably on the house. So I offer some choices I prefer. As far as porches go I think a pitched roof is unfaithful to the style of the house and a contemporary flat roof would sit better. However I worry that it will either crowd the window and garage door or be too narrow so I’m not sure any porch will work and would concentrate efforts on landscaping....See More- 11 years ago
