I think the hallway may be a little too narrow to have art etc on the side walls ( but could be wrong, what are the measurements?) so would draw attention to the end wall. You can try various things. Paint the end wall in a contrasting colour, a warm one will bring the wall in, or hang a big piece of art or mirror. You could even try a bookcase wallpaper for the corridor in the 2nd pic. As Sandie mentioned try lights, I'd have pendant lights hanging at different heights. If you go for a runner start it from the middle of the corridor to draw the eye down but not at the start.

Thanks thanks for your advice. I like the idea of wallpaper and a mirror. I recently bought a large mirror from a flea market that I want to use in the hall. I have to keep the bench and also an old bureau which has open shelves in the bottom originally meant for books but now adapted for shoe storage. The hall is only 126cm wide by about 4m long with only a tiny window in the door which we cannot afford to replace. I don't know if it would look odd with one wall only in wallpaper. At the moment it is painted in F & B Farrows Cream which I am fed up with now! I intend to paint the Bench and bureau - what colours would you suggest for walls, wood and the furniture. It's hard to tell how wide the lanterns are but I wouldn't go for something too skinny. I'd have art just on the left. The middle of the art should be eye level and mimic the shape of the wall it's on. So wall 1 something portrait. Wall 2, why not hang a narrow shelf as in the first pic and have a group of 4 art hung over the top? I'd probably also keep the art below the height of the door frames but I'd just try it out as Jules said and tack bits of paper etc to the wall. Personally I'd paint the ceiling a darker tone to bring the height down, I'd also add a runner for some texture. If you did want anything on the rhs I'd go for a mirror

The narrowness of the hallway is the problem and the radiator is as flat as they can be! It would narrow the hallway if you replaced it with a radiator shelf (unless it is very narrow). If you don't have any cupboard space in the other rooms or under the stairs, the wall space just under the window and to the left of the photo for wall hung storage. Sorry, can't draw straight lines here (photo below) but you can see where there might be enough space for a narrow wall coat rack on the wall to the left of the photo. Wall coat rack lower down for kids coats and jackets (photo). Placing the mirror on the left by stairs to reflect the light from the window. Or use a mirror with shelves behind it as shown here: Under the window, use hanging baskets for shoes - something like the ones in Amazon.
