Are fan lights dated/naff?

We are currently rennovating & extending our property. As a result of a double extension across the back of the house we have lost one of two windows in what will be the spare bedroom. The second window is at the side of the property. We have discovered that the bedroom doors used to have a fan light (window thingy) above them. Reinstating them would add some light back into the room.
Do you think they are naff or outdated? Would they make much difference anyway?

Comments (20)LED is very much the present and will be the only option in the future. Why install a outdated technology like halogen or incandescent lighting? LED has many advantages with different colour temperatures, very good colour rendering, variable angles of light and of course low running and maintenance costs. Comments (31)LED strips for low level cupboard/island plinths have their merits in showcasing themselves, however aren't necessary if the space already houses good lighting from overhead lights or natural lighting. However, using under cabinet lighting underneath wall units works particularly well when the main lighting isn't required and the occupants wish to have a dimmer atmosphere. Comments (27)I am a retired garden designer. Sorry I don’t have time to read all the comments, so apologies if I am repeating what others have said. I think your plans show that you have thought this out and worked hard. I would n’t have a brick arch. It will look heavy. I can’t gauge the scale, but your borders look as if they may be under a metre wide in some places. If a border is 60 cm wide you will probably get in a climber at the back and a perennial layer at the front. It won’t look ....substantial but may just about fill the bill. It seems as if something less than this is what you will look out on from your patio. The border around the edge of the lawn tapers to a point. Generally speaking there isn’t really a plant that you can put there and expect to form that shape. 8 years agoHi. I don't personally like the 70s style small rectangular ones as I'm not a fan of that style so it looks outdated (to me)I do think it very much depends on the choice of door, panes, and size of the transom ( never knew it was called that!). If you Google images of house with transoms over internal doors it will give you more ideas. As its a spare room though I might perhaps just add a large mirror
