Struggling with kitchen colours, help please!
We have inherited a 'cherry' kitchen and we are planning on changing the floor tiles, work tops and tiling above worktop, however I am stuck at what colours to go with.
changing the kitchen is not an option at the moment and I don't think it will look bad once a few things have been changed. I was thinking about going for a dark worktop with dark tiles above. I am stuck at the floor. Should I go cream, I have been looking at karndean flooring but as they are mainly woods I don't think I could get anything to look good beside the cherry kitchen? I was looking at cream polished porcelain. Any suggestions?
its a west facing kitchen, dining and we are going to knock through to the dining room so it will be a very large kitchen/living/dining space. Also want to run the same flooring into the conservatory and also into the hallway to the front door. We have kids and a dog and have had a few washing machine leaks in the past hence we have ruled out real wood!

Comments (11)Hi. Can you just clarify what you mean by original? Do you mean a one off piece or an antique? What is your budget? I would probably go for something either vintage, industriał or victorian (is the table victorian??) in style then add accessories to mix the old and new such as a contemporary chair, old chopping board, antique copper pans, old scales, enamel storage etc. I know it sounds odd but people are also starting to use table lamps in kitchens ( some do look odd!), but until you can afford extra lighting this could be an option at the end of the counter and/or Tom's option of floor lamps. You could also look at a triple pendant which will give you more light or you can get the multiple ones that run off one fixture but I'm not that convinced for your room. Also a mirror over your radiator may help. Do you have any cabinet lighting? Comments (21)Hi Yolanda - I'd change the stools, table and chairs, and swap the pendants for something in coloured glass or (personally) metallic, and change the cabinet handles from steel to brass/gold. Instant lift. Splashback-wise, try distressed mirror (suitably tempered and toughened) as it has loads of personality, bounces light around and is easy to clean. Then play with wall colour. Warm accents will stop the wood door from jarring so much (or paint it, if you can convince your husband). Comments (5)I don't have anything wildly different to add but I like sketching ideas so here's my two cents! You've already figured out the best position for your sofas and tv. Just pull the sofas in a bit as Jen P suggested and pull the ottoman back from exile, and already you'll see a difference. If you're tired of the carpet, try a dark wooden floor with a huge rug? Carolina is spot on with the wraparound tv console..I'd add shelves around the corner for books, photos, and a few favourite items. Then you need two fantastic armchairs. This is where you add personality and purpose to that dead space. It becomes a cosy conversational corner for when you're not watching tv. Nice and close to the kitchen for refilling your wine/coffee! You're lucky that pretty much any colour and style of chair will work with the sofas. If you're really feeling brave, the chairs don't even have to match each other...! You can draw from the burgundy/rust colours in your cushions, or just find chairs you love and use them as a starting point for a new colour scheme. One last thought...is the door to stairs used a lot, or can you go around by the kitchen? Comments (19)Thanks all for your help, we haven't got underfloor heating and I have two very messy boys especially with water so I think engineered wood is out and so are real tiles as they would be so cold. Its a north facing room so I'm very aware I need to warm the look of the room up as the grey and the white walls are looking very stark now. Karndean, amtico and poyflor are the companies i'll look at then. Has anyone used polyflor? They seem much cheaper than the other two companies? And oneplan would grey flooring look weird against the grey wood Worktop? Bit too matchy? I'd like to go a bit more modern Scandi kitchen. Unfortunately my husband likes country style hence the kitchen handles and look we chose. But now I want to warm it up a bit and give it a more Scandi look?! Thanks for your help...See More

PRO9 years agoPersonally if it were my kitchen I would paint the units as suggested by Zoe - something like the picture below.
I'd also change the handles to Nantucket cabinet pulls as in the photo.Good luck with your project, would love to see the finished project.

PRO9 years agoAs it is west facing, I imagine you get lots of beautiful daylight? The downside of dark counter tops is that they actually show lint & dust a lot more than a lighter worktop. I would advise getting a dark piece of plastic or tile & leaving it in your brightest part of the room for a week & see how much you have you polish it up to get an idea of if it will be practical for you.
The upside of lots of daylight is that you can still go for warm undertones & they won't age looking yellow as they get older, I would be tempted to do a warm grey base & lighter top in your space, a tip that we don't do in the UK enough is boxing in the space above the wall units, by doing that it will make your ceiling look higher & the space feel bigger, some MDF & a splash of paint will give you the look for minimal cost, you could even or handles in some of the space to give the illusion of custom cupboards are there.
Finally I would do a porch light & be brave with brass finishes. A west facing room is such a treat I would be tempted to give it some wow factor in the finishes to make it feel like a retreat.
