Help with lounge please. Colours, lighting, sofas and anything else.

The curtains and cushions are new. I had hoped they would go with the picture, but it doesn´t quite look right. (Not the end of the world if the picture goes in another room, just difficult to find a replacement we both like). My OH has now decided that there isn´t enough colour in the room. He likes the pink in the picture. I´m wondering if it would look OK to buy pink lampshades? Would this help the picture work?

The standard lamp, I know is too small for the space, so needs to be replaced and there are two table lamps. If I change all three shades it would bring the pink into both ends of the room. If I do this, what would the light be like? We like a nice warm glow, not too dull.I´ve put my fleece over a lamp to give an idea of the colour.

Ideally I would like to change the sofas for new ones in silver grey leather. I´m woried though that one would be too near the log burner. Would it help to protect it if I use a throw over the back of the sofa when the burner is lit? I´m in Spain so log burner season is fairly short. Leather is the most practical material for us as we have two large dogs who rub along the sides and so any sofas need to be cleaned often.

I´m also wondering about the size of the sofas. I´m thinking the one in front of the burner should be a three seater and the one in front of the window, a larger three seater, but how large? Does it need to sit square under the window? If I go much larger, it won´t unless I push the smaller one nearer to the burner and that won´t work.

I would welcome any other ideas for the room please, exept for rugs. Rugs are a no go for me. I have ordered two new glass lamp tables for either end of the sofa under the window, so the horrid temporary ones will go, but I feel that something is missing.

Hi Marina. I keep looking at the pics and can't work it out, do you have 2 or 3 sofas?! I think you could possibly get away with fuschia but the lamps will stand out a fair bit unless you add a little for other accessories. If you want something That blends a little more you could try a blush pink, it just depends on what look you want. Alternatively you could just pick up the colours in the curtains, ie charcoal lampshades and add some green in a cushion etc. I don't think the art looks bad in the room but not completely wow either, I think it would work really well in a silver frame though imo. I think the coffee table needs accessoring and I would add a much taller vase of flowers on the dining table. Is there also another place the display cabinet could go? The sideboard looks great but the cabinet detracts from it (as a focal point, not that the cabinet isn't nice!!). What size are the table lamps you've ordered as I think you need something with a little more height. Your new additions are looking great btw

Thank you. We have two sofas. One under the window and one along the log burner, so they sit in an L shape. The sofas are one side of the log burner and the dining table, the other. Agree about the coffee table. I´ve been looking for something to go on there. Love the idea of the silver frame for the large picture. I´ve never liked the existing frame, so will definitely look at that. I´ll also look for a taller vase for the dining table. Unfortunately there isn´t anywhere else for the display cabinet. It was bought for a different house and I don´t like it in this one, but I´m having a hard time persuading my OH to get rid of it. I was hoping to use the existing lamps, just with different shades. The lamp table will lift the one by the sofa a bit. I´understand what you mean though so will keep that in mind. I like the sound of blush pink. That will probably be easier to live with than fushia. Will have a look for some.

If you wanted you could buy new deep lloyd loom style chairs..they come in all sorts of F&B colours. I wouldn't agonise too much about colour. obviously, you could go for the stone/taupe/ neutral colours but personally I would go for a soft purple/aubergine colour ( think natures colours) which would add the same depth of colour as your walls. Think a colour would mix the room up a bit. A cafe table looks gorgeous with flowers on which leaves room for a drink or magazine, & again, is a nod to the garden. magazines & books are hugely decorative & some say essential for a room. I use old books for the rooms I do & to add emphasis to the furniture I source. You can choose an interior magazine, monthly, with a cover that appeals to add seasonal change. Layer your room gradually , experiment & have fun. keep an eye out for the right lamps, shades & cushions & think big rather than twee. Oh! & essentials I didn't spot but could well be there are paintings & a mirror?!

I would consider a wallpaper on the fireplace wall with a large mirror above the mantle to balance the fireplace - I don't think the photo canvas is working where it is...if you're against wallpaper then consider some freestanding shelving units - perhaps with cupboards at the bottom for additional storage and use them to display books/treasures/lamp etc - you could even buy inexpensive ones from Ikea and then paint with chalk paints (goes on anything) and top coat with Farrow and Ball interior eggshell to make it wipeable.

Hi there! I would use the paper - it looks lovely behind the sofa and this is a big room that can take the pattern - you might find it difficult to fill with other things! Can you get matching roman blind made for the window? And maybe a plain silk curtain for the doors. The colours you’ve picked are light and fresh - perfect for a room well lit with natural light. You will probably need lots of lamplight in the evenings to keep it looking good. I would pick a light grey or beige for the other walls, that tones with the wallpaper and personally I would not go for a grey rug, I would brighten the floor area with a cream rug, not so practical, perhaps, but it will really give some love to the natural light in the room. If you have one central pendant it needs to be large, in proportion with the room. Hope this helps :)

Ah ok! What's opposite the window? Could you have 2 equal sized sofas opposite each other which would keep the view of the log burner completely clear? As the coffee table is quite large maybe buy a tray to anchor any accessories? You could then just add a couple of piles of books or even nice magazines which is a cheap update and looks good! The cabinet is nice, would it not fit in the hall? If you get a new dining table vase maybe pick up something with the blue or green in so you have some continuation of the colour in the dining room?

Opposite the window is the door into the study and the TV next to it. It wouldn´t really work there. Also, where it is now, it is facing the patio door and view to the garden which is the best orientation. The tray is something I hadn´t thought of. Will look out for something in the right colours. It is a good idea as we are lazy and tend to eat at the coffee table in the evenings so whatever is there gets pushed to one side. That would be easy to do with a tray. I do happen to have a green vase that I could try. Not sure what to put in it though. Fresh flowers are too expensive here for everyday and they don´t last any time at all particularly in Summer. We don´t have a hall. The main door opens into a sort of alcove off the lounge, but there is no space there.
