Exposed internal brickwork

How do we clean and treat this brickwork ? Any ideas ?

Hi, we would recomend a high strengh mortar cleaner. Something like "Azpects Easy Cleaning Mortar Stain Remover".

Unlike
any other acid/alkaline cleaners, it does not require neutralising
after application. Its just a case of brushing it on, leaving it for 10 minutes, and then rinsing it off.

Does this cleaner impact on metalwork in the vicinity such as a cast iron or steel stove? Also do you have a product to bring out the shine in bricks?

Thanks so much. Really helpful to get that confirmed in black and white. I've dithered so much on this, but I couldn't live with asymmetry and so have left it to pretty much match the other fireplace in size. But it's been tempting...

Hi we have just encountered a similar situation with our internal stair wall. Our plaster practically fell off the wall when we had to install a steel beam. There were generally negative comments from those around about leaving it as brick but my husband who is an architect and I really liked it. I cleaned it down with an acid wash, cleaned again with water then sealed it with a 50/50 PVA/water mix. It has it's imperfections, where brick has crumbled a bit and where previous owners have tried to sort it, though not very well, but it all adds a bit of character. We love it. I can see where builder is coming from on the insulation front but it's your house and if you're happy to go with the extra work externally to enjoy the inside more then go for it. You could always strip the plaster off, decide it's not for you and plaster over it, but if you don't even try you will always wonder.

@Pavan123... just to update you. I've spent the best part of a week (not full days of course - just few hours here and there when I can!) cleaning the wall up. It was COVERED in old render and dust - thick chunks of it in most places. The mortar pointing was like sand as well. So I got a water spray and a putty knife (or a flat edge wallpaper scraper would do) with a dust mask and goggles on and just scraped off what I could whilst spraying water over it to keep the dust to a minimum. Then i manually scraped out the top of the pointing then scrubbed it all with a stiff brush and warm soapy water (I should have used sugar soap) then rinsed it off. Now it's ready to re-point and I will give it a final clean/wipe down after the pointing sets as there are only some parts with the white dust on. I could get brick acid on it but I kind of like the old look so don't want them to be TOO clean and new looking! LOL. My wall is a bit of a mess though to be fair. Will post a pic up later. Whoever built it must have used any old broken bricks lying around as there are chunks missing out of some, some rows are all split bricks etc. Might remove a few and put full ones back we saved.

That explains the “rustic” finish. If it were a full height wall it could look really good, but as it’s such a small area it just looks untidy. I’m not sure re-pointing will make much difference as the bricks are different sizes and rather higgledy piggledy in layout. I think plastering will be a huge improvement.
