Thanks all for your replies. One of the radiators will be in a newly built extension which will have plastered walls. The extension will be separate to the old part of the house which contains the chimney breast and majority of the kitchen. If I had a white radiator in the old part so as not to detract from the features, would or should the radiator in the new extension be white or would it work as a feature if black? I should also say that the majority of the extension is glass and bio-fold doors with anthracite frames. For some reason I’m having a mental block over the radiator colour... I know this sounds daft... Tia Shirley

If the bifolds are white and they will be either side of the doors, I’d go with white.

That's a good point about the narrower radiators. We'd probably prefer them anyway, so if i restrict my search to two column, I can go wider without completely over-provisioning the heating capacity. Some manufacturers seem to go to 1.5m wide in two-column, which is getting close to the width of the window. That's also a great point about positioning the radiators a bit higher on the wall than the 'default' height. My current radiators are 75cm, but most of the radiators I'm looking at (Acova, Milano Windsor) only come in 60cm height. Nordic Column has a 75cm option, but I haven't seen many reviews of them. But if I nudge up the wall a bit, that should make the 60cm look better suited to the height of the wall. Thanks all!

Hi Louise, 1 - Most charge a daily rate. Anything from £100 to £250 per day. Really depends on a lot of factors like experience, location etc. 2 - smaller radiators may be cheaper to buy but the extra work of moving pipes could put the price over that of larger ones that don't need pipes adjusting. 3 - Yes it will cost more to relocate the radiators. The more work for the plumber the more he'll charge. Plus the cost of new pipes. 4 - Yes it makes much more sense to get radiators done while floorboards are up. Less work for the plumber the less he'll charge. 5 - Radiator heat output is measured in BTUs(British Thermal Units). Generally the more water a radiator can hold the greater it's heat output. Bigger/thicker radiators hold more water so output more heat. There are many online BTU calculators that can help you figure out what size of radiator is best for each room in your house. An experienced plumber will also be able to help when choosing the right size radiator.
