Hi, we've just had our new kitchen finished, and I'm alternating between loving it and worrying it's too stark - what do you think? Want to get a curtain for patio door but undecided on colour/plain/pattern, any other ideas??

Comments (22)I think that is a lot better. YAY! You'll get good flow from the utility straight into the kitchen with your shopping bags, coats, etc. and it looks like there'll be enough space in the "extended hall" to use it constructively. I do have a couple more questions/suggestions: - The doorway from the utility with the fridge next to it - if the fridge door is open, you won't be able to get through. Also, because the area next to the fridge is all wall cabinets, you might have the "where do I dump things?" issue. I would put another counter on the left wall between the two banks of cupboards. It'll probably only be two or three cabinets and counter, but I think it'll be handy. OR you could put the FF there. - I'd centre the hob on the island, but I think that is a good spot for it. - The other thing is something One Plan raised - walk in pantry? You could have part of the utility dedicated to this, or do you think you'll have enough food storage with the wall cupboard near the ovens (I assume this will be a pull out number as these are really handy to be able to see everything....See MoreWhat goes first: new kitchen cabinets or new flooring?
Comments (5)There are arguments either way. Flooring should always be fitted beneath floor standing appliances (whether freestanding or integrated) for ease of installation and removal (and in the case of freestanding appliances, to ensure there are no areas that are visible without any flooring). By having the floor fitted first ensures a level surface, and as mentioned above items such as end panels will be fitted directly on the floor. The kitchen fitter is obviously taking responsibility for not scratching the new floor during installation, and particularly when moving appliances such as the fridge and range cooker. When fitting timber flooring, it is necessary to leave an expansion gap around the perimeter. By plonking heavy kitchen furniture on top largely prevents the natural expansion/shrinkage of the timber, and therefore there is a risk that the flooring may bow or pull apart. One solution is for the kitchen fitter to cut out around the plinth legs, but this does mean if you ever change the layout, but wish to keep the flooring, you will left with a floor resembling Edam cheese!...See MoreNew kitchen , new floor ?
Comments (14)Looking at your ideabook, you're definitely not after the industrial look with your bricks! This is a more toned down colour scheme which is light and airy and still has warmth to it. Maybe you could add pale grey tiles or splashbacks similar to the worktops in this kitchen. Are you adding flooring just to the kitchen or is this part of a bigger renovation project? Comments (6)If you have a magnet, hold it to the Le Creuset pots. If it sticks to the pot, you can use it on an induction hob. I’ve recently switched from gas to induction. Induction is much quicker and you can let the burner switch off automatically after a set time. And it’s easy to clean. So far the advantages I’ve found. Disadvantages: can’t see the flame, so have to work out what the settings do. I’m taking a long time to get used to that, but then again, I’ve only ever cooked on gas before. Sometimes the pans make an annoying high pitched tone. I had to buy new pans, but my big iron stew pot (not Le Creuset) should work on it. Haven’t used it yet, but it is magnetic. For my other pans I went to IKEA and got a great set with heavy glass lids from there. Very happy with them. Had to say goodbye to one of my big iron frying pans, because the bottom was slightly warped and then it doesn’t work well either. All in all I’m happy with the induction hob. I love the speed. But I think I still prefer gas. Anyway... we have a downdraft in an island, so gas wasn’t an option. But you could do both perhaps? Two gas burners, two induction ones for example?...See More

Tracked bifold plantation shutters. Match with full height shutters on window - control the light/shadow. They are clean, cool and visually stunning.
