Kitchen work surface

We've just has a (beautiful) new kitchen and 3 months in the silestone has cracked we are told due to 'thermal shock' from just one hot pan. When deciding what to get we were told it wasn't invincible but this material could take moderate heat. In a kitchen inevitably warm things creep on to a work surface! Now we are told only warm plates. Very disappointed! Any thoughts? Thank you has cracked

It is recommended by Silestone.com that hot pans not be put directly on to the surface, and, that you use a trivet. So I guess it is unfortunate that this has happened. I don't think that moderate heat includes a pan straight from the stove as that would presumably be classed as 'red hot'. I feel very sorry for you, but it is down to the consumer to know the product and use it accordingly, Silestone can be marked, and scratched too, so i guess be more careful. Such a shame. You can put hot pans on Granite..............my wife does it quite often if she runs out of room on the cutting boards. However, for the most part we do try and use the cutting boards in preference. Our granite has been in situ for around 15 years and still looks like new.

Thank you so much. Exactly I agree on granite : we said good bye to some amazing perfectly good granite . We didn't put a pan straight form the stove on the side . We were not given any info other than told it was extremely hardy! I feel we have been misplaced and people should know it's a much more delicate product than kitchen suppliers would have one believe.

You could use a grey natural stone with a bit of texture and with white strips in it, so it will match the white of the gloss and the grey of the concrete, here is an example of the type of stone and here of a worktop

PIcs would be handy. If it's solid wood ie beech block, then it will just need to get dried out, the whole surface sanded back and then re-oiled. It's a little labour intensive, but not difficult. I'm doing one at the moment as it happens!

Hi Emma, We have installed the Cemento spa in several of our projects. Our clients like the suede as it does not need drying/buffing up once its been cleaned. My suggestion would be to borrow the small samples from your kitchen supplier (suede and polish) and use them as testers/coaster deliberate spillages etc - this will give you a better idea of usability and aid you in making the correct decision. When I went to look for Quartz, I was told that it's heat resistant but not heat proof - something I wasn't aware of & which apparently lots of people don't know. However, having read up on it more, it does tend to mention this. Apparently it's due to the resin in the Quartz. I hope it's not a major crack! Your kitchen does look beautiful & love the Windows / doors.

Playing devils advocate, I think you need to take some responsibility here. Did you read and familiarise yourself with the manufacturers post-installation literature? There would have been some - even on their website. If the info is available and you have not given heed to the recommendations,, unfortunately, it's down to you. Common sense tells you not to put hot pans directly onto kitchen surfaces.
