I agree with Emanuelle. I think wood brings warmth to schemes like this. I have also lived with wood worktops and love the fact they can be sanded and resealed. I have broken so many lovely places on my granite, but it does look nice too. I think your issue is with tone, not colour. The floor is tonally dark and almost everything else is light. As long as the worktop is in between tonally it should be down to your personal preference.

Atti. Congratulations!!!!! Great times ahead :) Yes they can be painted and I would recommend changing the handles which would be a massive difference. You may need to fill the holes and drill new ones depending on the shape of handles you get. So I would choose them and fit then first. Remove them again and then paint the units. There are plenty of great child friendly paints with no chemicals so I would chose one of those if the child will be in the house during or just after the work being done. In my opinion you should be pushing the designer to do a better job. The washer and dishwasher weren’t shown in the first render- they are now there but the drawer lines are interrupted which doesn’t look great. I also think you need to consider ducting the extractor - if you are in the U.K. building regs will demand it. If so where does the ducting go? Is there indeed enough room for the motor in the slim wall cabinets drawn? Personally I think that the high windows limit your options and don’t add anything to the design. I think the drawn shelf unit is a different material and this likely affects your opinion. I like the vertical handle rail with the ovens- perhaps it should be applied to all the units otherwise how are you going to open the tall unit to the right of the oven? Lastly I like the deep orange, I think it sits best with the dark wood or black but you shouldn’t add too many materials- simple is better.

Wood effect porcelain tiles for the whole downstairs - yes or no?

We have our open plan kitchen/dining/living room in wood effect tiles and the front sitting room in real wood. I wouldn’t want a cosy sitting room to be tiled in the UK, personally. UFH is great but doesn’t quite compensate for the look and feel of a naturally warmer surface and also you can’t use thick rugs without compromising the UFH effectiveness. Equally, I’m so glad we didn’t put real wood in our main room, given the amount that gets dropped on it. Hallway is also tiled, again wood would have got trashed there.
