window choice

We're currently planning to improve our current extension (the room with 3 windows to the left of the stained glass window). We get very little light in the area so are planning to open up that whole corner with glass. Our dilemma is how modern to be. The house is 1936 and is quite traditional roof. could we get away with aluminium framed windows or best to stick with more traditional timber framed?

Maybe you could form a seat which , in the summer , when the glass is slid back, could become an external seatingshelf on which to enjoy a cool drink ........maybe a link to the garden ?

Have you thought of combining the corner glazing and roof light such that the internal space appears as part of the garden ?.

I can see that these are not the original sash windows but they are at least in proportion and they don't appear to be damaged or in need of replacement. Do you imagine that replacements should look very different? Do you have a vision of how you want it to look? Earlier comments are right that sash windows are available in materials that match different budgets so although wood is the most desirable material it may not be an appropriate investment for the value of the house. Personally I think the benefit of aluminium is that you can get very thin frames but that look is likely not appropriate for the house.

Hi, We are planning on installing 2 new windows in the living room either side of the fireplace and 2 new windows in the dining room on the same wall (you can walk from living room through glass doors to dining room so you'd be able to see all 4 new windows along that wall as soon as you walk in the living room). We want to put sash windows in there but wondered if this would go with our current large living room window (please see photos - excuse the mess!)? I like the simple 4 pane ones and my husband likes the 12 pane ones. The wall they would be going on is west facing so we'd get lots of light (800x1200 living room windows and 800x1526 dining room windows - planning already passed) and that wall is on the side of the house that has no windows currently so wondering if we could get away with it! Our builder suggested it might look too busy for the 12 pane ones. Living room wall is 4.5m (room 5x4.5m) Anyway, please let me know what you think (current living room upvc window will be painted white to match new windows). Thanks for any help (I've been trailing pinterest for literally hours trying to find a way to work out if they would go!).

We recently replaced ours after lots of back and throwing with designs. we wanted grey but decided against due to contemplating with how long they'll "stay fahsionable". In the end we went with white & decided to not have the diamond lead this time wheich we thing made them look more modern and lighter inside. We used a really useful website www.windowsplusonline.co.uk where we were able to design them ourselves to suit what we wanted. They do offer a range of colours and designs and as someone said above grey exterior and white interior also seemed a really good idea. I'm afraid I can't help you choose between aluminium or wood, but I can suggest a sun tunnel if you need more daylight. If you've not heard of them, they're ingenious products that will transport daylight from your rooftop into the room below. Even when you live in the UK.

For more impact, you could install VELUX windows. Roof windows let in up to 3 times more daylight than vertical windows so may be a better investment in terms of comfort.

Yes, I should have said, we are planning to put in a roof light as well. There is currently a flat roof there so we're going to open than up and put in large roof light to open it all up.

You could go with something more modern to contrast with the existing as I would guess the extent of glazing you are considering is probably not 'of the original style' so it can be as modern as you like .... and bring that part of the house into the 21st Century..

Thanks for comments and links. Yes, we're certainly replacing all of the extension windows (ie the 3 small ones and the larger lower one to the far left, probably putting french window type doors here). budget probably won't stretch to entire house and the windows we have aren't that old. Our concern is, will a nice clean modern look go with our fairly traditional pitched roof/red tile?

Emma, in answer to your question, the other windows in the house are upvc. I really like the image you posted, and we are planning a window seat just as you've shown. We would however want to be able to open the window. So I imagine we can't go for that completely frame less look.

No, South for back elevation and side windows (where you can't see) are East but get flooded with sun in the evening. The roof light will hopefully bring in early morning sun.

This gives you a better idea of the whole are. The back door will probably be left as it is but we'll open up the window beside it to make it larger.

I *love* that photo and dream of the day I can have a feature like that.

Studio Parkoar: Yes, that's a good idea re. window seat. That's generally what we'd like to do, i.e., connect the room more with the garden by using glazing. I don't think we'd be able to combine the roof light with the corner windows without reconfiguring the roof which isn't something we really want to do.

Sterlingbuild: I don't think we really want uPVC for the new windows, but there's no harm in having a look. I think we'll either go for modern aluminium or more traditional wooden windows. I would like to go for aluminium but I'm just slightly concerned it would be incongruous with the traditional elements.

If you can't reconigure the top you may be able to incorporate glazing in the slopes and on what looks like a flat good above .

Definately ALUMINIUM .....also be carefull to make sure the glazing is framed by some structure so that the glass looks as if it's punching into the original structure .
