Hi Pamela, what type of wood flooring do you have, and is it suitable for the new kitchen area, as ideally you'd have one type straight through. If it's not suitable, then stay away from laminates as the quality and style could clash with the wood. Maybe go for a good tile............normally i'd say porcelain, but dogs can skid on that as the grip isn't to good for them. You've gone for a black and white theme and tying it in with wood can difficult as they two colour schemes don't gel well. How about a wood effect, but grey tone tile. The textures would look similar, but be different??

This tile below has the grey tones, but also introduces a little brown to tie the two areas together. Introducing an accessory colour in the kitchen which works well with the lounge will also help with the transition.

Thank you for your quick response. I have been toying with the idea of using wood effect tiles. The wood flooring in the living room has a pine look about it. It's the original flooring, sanded and sealed. It would be good to have all the downstairs area in the same flooring.

If you're set in stone on the idea of wood - Reclaimed Flooring is the way to go and the company with the same name have a variety of gorgeous types.. You could get creative with the design as herringbone or other designs like chevrons are all possible... It gives warmth and texture to your kitchen and would compliment the rest of the home...

Certain woods can look great with age... Or doggy pads! If you're not set in stone then how about Stone? Mandarin Stone for example- again they have a large range of fabulous finishes.. I do firmly believe that if you're going to, the real deal is not only stylish but lasting and wood and stone work beautifully together.. : ))

I contacted a firm who do concrete polished floors and it was mega expensive!

Now keen to use wood effect porcelain tiles throughout the whole of the downstairs area to give it a continued flow of the same flooring. Now I have to decide what colour would work best. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks for all your help. It is much appreciated.

hi pamela. We have some large wood-effect porcelain tiles that would look great if you are thinking of using tiles throughout. Three of the colours available are below. We do also have a much lighter, more washed out colour but, again, may not be great with muddy dog paws. They all have a slightly textured surface, so are good for non-slip. The colour variation in the first one is also a great way of adding some character to an otherwise black and white room.
