Bathroom Ideas Help Needed

We moved in a year ago and haven't done any decorating yet.
Id like to freshen up the bathroom.
The tiles and suite I can live with (not my choice but they are inoffensive) what can I do to brighten the place up? My initial thoughts are to replace the lino and bath panel, paint walls above tiles in a dark indigo blue or a pale blue? and paint ceiling white. Any colour recommendations or ideas are much appreciated. We are on a tight budget! Thanks in advance.

I think a nice dark blue might work very nicely. I think I'd add some encaustic tiles on the floor for an eclectic period look. I'd also do something else for storage as the current unit doesn't go with the old-school style.

Hi there, I think you'll be able to transform that space on a very tight budget without many problems at all. My suggestions would be as follows and are based on trying to be sympathetic with some of the nice traditional elements (door, tiles etc):
1. Replace the lino with Palioclic Arezzo floor from Karndean (a waterproof "click-lock" floor specifically designed for bathrooms which is really easy to lay yourself. The Arezzo is a beautiful washed oak effect which is both traditional & contemporary
2. Replace the bath panels with either plain or a traditional moulded variety and then paint this in the rich dark blue - Farrow & Ball's Drawing Room Blue or Pitch Blue, or perhaps Fired Earth's Tempest
3. Paint the walls in a lighter grey-blue such as Fired Earth's Glass Samphire, Pale Cirrus or Pearl Ashes
4. Remove the wood-cladding on the ceiling and plasterboard & skim it - worth getting a decent plasterer to do this, but should be a really quick way to make a HUGE improvement for modest outlay
5. Find a really lovely period mirror, or perhaps pick up a second hand vintage picture frame (think gilded mouldings) and get a piece of mirror glass made for it
6. Find some great curtains - you can find some great"off the peg" ones all over the place
7. Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise!
If & when you can afford it, I'd replace your tall storage unit and possibly basin with something like this from Roper Rhodes Burford range:

Or pick some beautiful traditional ceramicware from Burlington. It might be beyond your budget for now, but it is always possible to get to the finished article step by step!

If it's a plasterboard ( 'stud') wall, then it shouldn't be a big deal to remove it. I presume that you intend to retile the toilet? So removing the wall would not only open the room up but also reduce the area/cost of tiling. With regards o the plumbing, I'm not a plumber and can't see much from the pics, but I'd imagine your hot water comes from your combi boiler. It seems odd that one water pipe would supply all the flats in the building - normally the water board run the water mains to the outside of the house and then a supply to each flat branches out from there - so each flat would have it's own stop cock to shut the water off. It would be weird to find a stop cock inside the wall.... are you sure that this pipe supplies the whole building??

Hi. I'm a bit confused, have you bought the vanity and are looking to paint it? Is the rest of the bathroom fitted as you could add brass or copper taps for instance with a matching mirror? Accessories will also warm it. I like a little wooden stool in a bathroom which you can add accessories to i.e. A candle, natural sponge, flannel etc which has some texture. A plant on the window sill if you have one and then nice accessories for the sink and either some coloured towels or I like hammam ones. I've found a couple of pics but they may not post as houzz has issues :( These are using deep rich colours which may bring the cabinet towards you a little. A darker top for the vanity would also work

Chris. I think your tiles are a really nice choice and they will give you the classy feel that you want. Either format will be fine but the rectangular tiles fitted vertically will give the impression of greater height to the room. Clearly it’s a matter of personal choice but I think that the dark grey accents cheapen the class of the tiles and bring the room in. If you wanted to go for a contrast, maybe the vanity unit in a dark wood effect would look more classy. My other thought is that the room is maybe not big enough for the shower set up as you have it here. I think that water will splash beyond the screen and in front of the toilet. My thoughts are keep the open shower screen but go with a plain white porcelain shower tray with a slightly raised lip or keep the flooring consistent and opt for a frameless glass door which will keep the water in. Could be just me but I like to splash a bit in the shower and I think you’ll end up with water in front of your loo. Best of luck with the renovation. It’s going to look great.
