Need help with paint colour for extension

Really struggling to decide in a paint colour for our kitchen/lounge/diner extension. It's quite a big area with lots of windows but is north facing so won't get a huge amount of direct sunlight.

Im not keen on magnolia-type colours but don't want a pure white either.

Ive seen lots of recommendations for Dulux paint in Timeless. I got a sample today and I like that it's not cream and not pure white either but it looks a bit lemon in colour to me?! That's kind of put me off - to me it's like an extremely pale yellow.

i also tried Jasmine white which I think I preferred as the slight colour going through it appears to be peachy/pink. But we have dark grey windows and a grey kitchen island and I'm not sure if that would go with them.

I'd prefer to use Dulux paint. Any advice on paint colours would be very welcome! Thank you

Hi Verity!

It sounds like you have a wonderful space there! You are
right to stay away from a pure brilliant white within a north facing room as
the cool northern light can give the walls a blue, greyish tint which can make
the space feel very cold. We would suggest going for a red or yellow based tone
to add that extra warmth to your lovely open plan area. Timeless and Jasmine
White are both great options for this however if you are after something which
doesn’t give too much of a lemon or peachy undertone then Chalk Blush 4 could
be a great option for you.

It is a sophisticated neutral from our Dulux Amazing Space

to it which is made up of both red and yellow undertones. This will work so
beautifully alongside the greys of your window surrounds and your kitchen
island.

This may appear a little grey on screen so we do recommend

Thanks so much for your advice, I will definitely have a look at those. Do they come in the endurance range? Also do you think Egyptian Cotton be another good option? It's one I hadn't bought a tester for but not sure if it's too grey/green in colour. Also I keep seeing people mention Natural Calico as a good neutral colour but it looks a bit yellow to me. Thanks

I think I would go with the purbeck stone. I have elephants breath but it can be warm in South facing rooms and as your flooring is really warm I'd go for a contrast. I wouldn't go for the Hardwick for the same reason. Maybe get testers of both though to see how it works? The Dulux looks nice but I think a deeper contrast with the White may work better i

I like Option 2 honestly. Obviously you are finding it hard to visalize what the space will look like but honestly that is a huge space so I would recommend putting in the utility considering what you gain from it. You gain a space where you can block out the sound of the washing machine- who wants that sound when your eating dinner? Also washing is unsightly- do you wants piles of clothes in your nice brand spanking new kitchen? In terms of the corridor you are going to have lots of light coming through from the new extension. When you enter the front door and can see straight through to the garden spaces feel much bigger than they actually are anyway. Also who says it has to be boring. Have some fun wallpaper or colourful art hanging. Also if you want to make something more spacious use sliding doors for utility and wc. Less items infringing on corridor space. And lastly, the reception is purely personal preference based upon how your family function. Personally I prefer two rooms. Allows for more space to get away from the open plan area. Mini adults room and a kids room/study. Hope this helps

Thanks for the mentions peeps ! Just popped in while I'm stopping work for a quick coffee ! Re seamless worksurface - lots of composites do very well concealed joints ! But you can also use changes in height or adding a chopping block or marble pastry rolling area into long runs to hide the fact you needed to make a join . You are correct,
Natural Calico is a beautiful tone but it is a yellow based natural so you may
find that it has more of a creamy tone than the Timeless that you have tried.
Egyptian Cotton is a really popular shade for us and it does have a slightly
greenish undertone, it will work within your space and look really
sophisticated alongside grey features however overall it will give a slightly
darker feel than the other shades you have tried.

Hi, I have a bit of an update! I went into M&S today, for nothing whatsoever to do with paint but whilst walking by their furniture department I noticed the most lovely grey wall painted on one of their display walls. I now know for sure I want that paint in my kitchen! I will phone them tomorrow to find out what paint it is as apparently they keep records of all the paint they use. So if you're not too fed up with me (!)...I will be back tomorrow with a photo of the space I need to decorate and a question for you about which walls you would recommend I should paint with this grey colour. The rest of the walls can then be whichever off white goes best with it. So I'm thinking just one or two walls in the grey but not entirely sure which ones or how many. Just keeping my fingers crossed that they can tell me the name of the paint tomorrow. Looking at the Dulux webpage it looks a bit like polished pebble or frosted slate.

Hi Verity,

That sounds great! Picking out a soft grey for a couple of
the walls, and allowing the rest of the space to be off white, will add depth
and interest, while retaining a calm atmosphere. Dulux Frosted Steel and
Polished Pebble will work beautifully.

I would love to see the space, so I will look forward to
seeing your pictures and we can have a look at which walls would work best to
carry the grey tone.

Thanks Beth, I've just sent you an email. The colour is Night Jewels 4 apparently. Looks a little darker on the screen than I remember but it was a gorgeous colour in the shop. I only have 3 days to get it sorted though! But now I've chosen the grey hopefully the rest will be easy! Thank you

Actually I'm not sure I've got the right paint name now. The code was dulux 00NN37-000. They said the Valspar match was called Stone Age.

Due to Night Jewels 4 being a neutral, pure based grey
colour, it means it’s very versatile in terms of which whites it will sit
nicely with. I would suggest Timeless, or even White Mist for this. White Mist
has a less yellow undertone when compared to Timeless, however this colour
unfortunately does not come ready mixed in our Endurance+ finish. This would
mean it would have to be made up at a DIY store or at one of our Decorator
centres. You can find your nearest decorator centre, or DIY store which has a

With regards to the placement of Night Jewels 4, the wall
where you plan to position a sofa would be perfect. Going for slightly darker
grey tones such as this, will then provide a fantastic backdrop for a statement
mirror or a piece of artwork, which will really zone your seating area.

I agree that the door wall would be a great place for the
grey to continue over, and you could even flow this along the wall which will
house the kitchen units too. Although this may seem like a large amount of
grey, your beautiful large ceilings and remaining walls will be in your chosen
off-white colour, which will retain a light and airy feel. I think that you are
right to keep the walls which have windows as the off-white, as it will allow
the lovely grey frames to stand out.
