Actually the curtains look fine, better than I expected but yes a totally different style to the rug and both quite distinct patterns so clashed. I'd go with a more abstract fluid rug in similar colours and a splash of something like pale lime. blue or orange so it's not too matchy matchy. One step at a time! I've been known to buy and change sofas and rugs in my living room numerous times until I'm happy (luckily I like pre-loved things so rarely lose much, if any money on them, just takes a bit of effort. I absolutely agree that rugs can totally change the feel of a room! In my living room, I chose a deep navy blue rug, quite similar to the one in your photo. I picked it because it adds richness and contrast against lighter walls and furnishings, and it makes the space feel cosy yet elegant.

Floors in kitchens get messy and need regular wipe overs. So a rug would be more work to keep clean. It could also be a slip hazard if rushing about. The only good thing about having a rug is that it keeps the feet warm in winter. To avoid cold feet, I wear thick bootee slippers in winter. Hence no rug in my kitchen even though there are so many lovely rugs out there. I just don't want the extra hassle.
