Recently renewed our kitchen and have gone from a gas hob to an induction one, mainly for the clean look. We love, love it. So easy to control the heat in seconds and of course so much easier to keep clean.

Induction is a clean and minimalist look so our preference in design work.

Induction is fast and safe.

I have ceramic but would love induction combined with gas. Gas for sauces etc and induction for the economic savings etc. I just saw this combo on houzz the other day: the gas burners seemed to grow out of the induction hob. Genius!!

Brid... I think induction would work well for sauces, just one touch of mine and it will simmer or keep things hot without burning or sticking.

my wife loves induction for the easy clean. but as current main cook I couldn't live without gas. we have both and I have to admit I make the gas hob filthy by fussing with the pans; something induction discourages.

In our old house we had gas, when we moved we inherited an old electric cooker which we used for a short time while we renovated. We now have induction & for us it's so much better for several reasons: heat efficiency, so easy to clean & integrated design. This is ours & you barely notice it in the work surface. Love it.

I used to have an Aga in my old house, at the moment I am building a new house and I have ordered an induction hob.

We currently have a gas Rangemaster and, up until now, have been die-hard fans of gas. After a lot of research and friends recommendations, we have just bought an induction job for our new home and I can't wait to use it!!!

Whilst the induction hob is on the increase, there is still the matter of the radiation they give off. There's not a big enough gap in performance between gas and induction, so at the moment its gas everytime for me.

Gas all the way. I haven't used an induction hob but the glass topped types put me off because they mark easily. They look great when they're first installed but after a little use they seem to degrade quickly and that's the last thing I want to see in a nice new kitchen. My Dad just bought an electric glass top hob and he's always cleaning it. If something wears on a gas hob then the majority of times you can replace the parts and get it looking good as new again. I mainly like gas because I fin it easier to gauge for cooking.

My induction hob still looks like new after four and a half years - and yes, I do use it most days.

Gas by preference. Also by necessity since our area is subject to power outages. Electric cooker, however.

I like gas and ceramic. So for our new kitchen we bought a Neff ceramic gas hob. So much easier to clean than a conventional gas hob but super fast heat adjustment. Perfect solution.

I've only ever used gas, electric [old school rings] and ceramic [at my mother in law's]. As a keen cook I love the ease of gas - but I do hate the mess. I've never tried induction, as x4csp comments, I'd be scared of damaging it by fussing over the pans. My 5 burner gas hob with wok burner does me proud and I don't see me changing any time soon for purely aesthetic reasons.

Yes, we too have a 5 burner gas hob with wok. Mess is relative.

Have had an induction hob for over 15 years and would never use anything else. It has timers and also can be set to come on and go off at a time convenient to you. It is clean and looks brilliant. Love it.

Love, love, love my induction hob. I cook from scratch every day, and 12 months on it still looks like new. No marks/scratches, would never have anything else now.

Gas only for me - instantly controllable, works with copper sauce pans and I don't have to worry about being heavy handed with a cast iron skillet.

Induction hobs are an excellent choice both in terms of style and practicality. They don't retain heat once the pan is removed so a very safe option for families with young children. Fitting flush with the countertop makes them a perfect choice in a contemporary home.

A bit of a cliche but, given the weather outside.................. an AGA.

Induction is super fast and easy to clean. However i miss a gas burner for wok cooking and drop scones so next time I will have a combination of the two which is now available from Siemens & Aeg.

It has to be gas for me as I have a habit of leaving hobs on if I can't see a flame - dangerous I know.

Hi Pitasmum - my induction hob switches itself off if there is nothing on it. The "burners" even detect the wrong sized pan - if I put a large pan on a small burner, it won't switch on, and likewise if a small one is put on a large burner. It even has a child lock - all these safety features are built in.

You can even place a tea towel on a "lighted burner" and it will not burn or catch light. You can actually cook (if you wanted to, but why would you) with a tea towel between the burner and the pan. That's how safe these are.

Oh - and "special" pans aren't needed; as long as they have a magnetic base they will work. I carry a small magnet in my bag when I go shopping - yes, I am that weird woman testing pans with a magnet!

Induction? No No No No No No. I don't know how many times I need to say it but please don't choose induction. It uses electro-magnetisation to heat food. I have a 21 year old daughter who has had a pacemaker since she was 4 years old. Magnets stop pacemakers. My daughter cannot live without her pacemaker and I'm sure there are many older people in the same boat. Induction hobs are not safe, they are potentially deadly. I can see the benefits of induction but manufacturers need to bring out more 'mixed' hobs (2 induction, 2 normal) to allow all the members of the family to use them. Just because it might not be relevant now, can you predict the future? What if one of your parents came round to babysit and needed to use the hob? We need to get the message out there. More and more people every year are fitted with medical devices that are affected by magnetic pulses but there doesn't seem to be any recognition from manufacturers. An induction hob could KILL my daughter, what could it do to your family member?

"If you use an induction hob for cooking, keep a distance of at least 60 centimetres (2 feet) from your pacemaker, as this type of hob generates an electromagnetic field that may interfere with your pacemaker settings."

They can be used with pacemakers.

It's been very interesting reading the comments above, especially regarding pacemakers which i'd never thought of, but do let clients know about any downsides to a product. Then at least the client can make a qualified decision.

Thank you for your comment Victoria. I'm sure if you are quite tall and have longish arms it would be possible to keep your pacemaker more than 2 feet from the hob but if you're more petite then that would be quite difficult. Can you imagine cooking with hot liquids etc whilst trying to make sure you stayed the right distance away? It simply wouldn't be practical or safe. I'm not suggesting they shouldn't be on sale, just that anyone buying one should think very carefully before doing so and manufacturers should make sure people know the dangers.

You don't have to be that tall, pacemaker sit just under the clavicle and unless you are leaning over the hob, in most adults that would be over 60cm away. I admit, different for a child. However, there is a only potential risk of interference with pacemaker function. Funnily enough, manufacturers don't like to say things aren't a problem as generally they are extremely keen to avoid potential litigation, so would rather advise avoidance than do costly safety trials. Does not mean it will stop working. Most people with pacemakers are not wholly dependent upon them for every heart beat, although some obviously are.
It's something to consider but does not mean that they aren't safe for the vast majority of the population, with or without pacemakers.

If I or any member of my family had or might have a pacemaker, or indeed a new owner, will not be installing induction in my new kitchen. Safety trumps aesthetics every time. Ditto, by the way, for having only a shower over the bath tub - dangerous for anyone, young or old, with limited mobility whether permanent or not.

This is the first time I have heard about induction affecting pacemakers. A very scarey thought and the public should be made aware. I agree about showers over baths too, I've had a few nasty trips and slips.

Our customers are 50/50 on gas induction, very rarely do we install a ceramic hob.
