Sloping ceiling

We have a tiny downstairs bathroom which we plan to revamp.
As it is under the stairs its sloping ceiling is a bit of eyesore especially because it has artex surface. Any suggestions how to disguise it? Or make a feature of it?

PRO9 years agoThat's one of the weirdest ones i've seen, why is the corner of the stairs in front of the window? Were the stairs moved at some point, it was surely not built that way. Also, the corner that's not supported looks like it's dropping, its not even close to level.
I'd get someone in to look at it. You could have the artex skimmed so that it's flat, which would look a lot nice and less dated. Then paint the same colour as the ceiling.
If you were going to re-vamp the whole loo, then you could go dark blue all over including that part and make it less obvious. Gold mirrors everywhere to make it look bigger etc The blue would go very nicely with the colours in the window.
- 9 years agoThank you for your comment. Stairs go to the right of the bathroom and then turn left. Probably the second pictures will be more clear to understand this lay out.

Comments (11)I think that one of the problems with this small bathroom is that it's broken into many elements, making the space appear even smaller. The slope is very sculptural but spoiled by the style of window. Would you consider replacing the window with a full pane of glass in a casement or awning style opening? I'd also recommend either removing the tongue and groove boarding and skimming the wall or replacing the boards with T & G that extend from the floor to the ceiling. I'd remove the tiles and replace with T & G as well. Also, to unify the space, remove the ceiling tiles, which look like polystyrene, and the coving to simplify the overall appearance. Comments (3)If you have access to a power socket in the room you could look at some kind of plug in pendant light which you could hang from the ceiling over the dining area. You will have to ensure you have enough cable to do this and think about the neatest way to run the cable from the socket. Comments (19)i like Jethro's idea - and I wouldn't have velux windows in bedroom unless you think it's going to be a really dark room just with the regular windows. definitely add velux in bathroom though. we are extending and keeping the pitched ceilings in bedroom and ensuite, gives a not-huge room a bit more wow factor and less of a box. yes more difficult to position lights and probably to heat too, but worth it i think. ceiling height plays a huge part in how you feel in a room so should always try and maximise wherever possible (within reason, keeping to human scale)...See MoreCoving & Sloped Ceiling???
Comments (7)In 1930’ ceiling to wall coving was rarely used, instead a picture rail was added to the wall a short distance below the ceiling. If you follow the bottom of the slope around the rest of the wall and add picture rail (use substitute deco rail if cannot find reclaimed original) so that the picture rail is one continuous line around the room and paint a lighter shade on the ceiling and slope than on the wall below, this will give the illusion of balance.
