Upstands or tiles

Hey,
So we have our kitchen nearly installed and having quartz folks pop round this week. However, we really really need some other opinions re up stands or tiles. I like both but can't have both, and want to create a chic feel. Would you file this kitchen or put an up stand?
I can't seem to find the tile tiles either and I think that would have helped to narrow down my options. Anyhows, should I wait for the dream tiles to match or upstand?

Comments (43)I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Comments (2)Dear Arabella, Firstly I would suggest you to think of the favourite style you would like your kitchen to feature. I was guessing that you aim to go for contemporary style look. Here are some images I have collected for your inspiration; all of them are contemporary style with wooden worktop and glossy cabinets. You could go for many looks just as you see on the pictures. Colours you could consider adding is grey, yellow, orange, red, blue. With the glossy finish you are going to have textured splashbacks would look well, tile, coloured glass sheet, stone tile. For flooring you can think of wooden floor as it would look nice to repeat the wooden element you will have as the worktop. Grey floor tile would also look well. You are at the very beginning of your project. At this stage best is to create your very own moodboard which is the fun part of your project. Collect ideas by pasting them on a board, add your favourite colours, texture, style you prefer, furniture pieces, accessories, etc. This way you will avoid making mistakes and spending money unnecessarily. Comments (4)Hello, @Cristina Tarlev made a good point, you don't have to have a quartz upstand if you don't want to and the backsplash can then be in glass or tiles that go straight tot he worktop. Of you are going to go with an upstand you could look at a 'funky' glass backsplash like in the image below. This is from @Charley Staniforth and here DecoKiln range. It really does make for a WOW factor and also because its glass its easy to wipe clean and no grouting that stains/gets dirty. Comments (7)I honestly don’t think it would look odd by having a section cut out around the window at all. I would just use it on the cill and if the window cill depth is similar to the upstand, then this could go into the recess as well so visually when you look at it, it’s all the same height. Mock up with something ie paper etc and see what you think! It would, however, look weird building the cill up so you can’t see the bottom of the window frame (unless you are replacing this anyway of course??) as the height from the top of the window would be different to the bottom and that would stand out more ......See More

- 9 years agoThanks everyone for your suggestions! We decided to upstand as it was so simple. We plan to accessorise it and make it warmer with woods, glass and gold.
