kitchen upstand into tiling or glass?

Hello! We are getting a new kitchen in, similar layout to this apart from a wider hob. Looking at quartz work surfaces and a 150mm quartz upstand but unsure what to do above the sink and hob. I feel if we had quartz go up to window sill as a sink splash back then down again for 30cm then up again for hob splash back it would look silly.

What is the go to thing to do in this situation? Perhaps have a quartz upstand into tiling?

I’d go for glass perhaps in a colour to contrast to the fascias.

Hi there,

You can still have the full wall finished differently (as you have now). Also it's not unusual to have the upstand run into tiling, but for either options don't be afraid to go with some funky finish on the wall, combine it with your quartz choice and kitchen style of course. See some examples below.

Hello, We supply LED illuminated glass splashbacks that change colours and many of our clients have put them behind hobs and ranges without a problem. If you want a "plain" glass splashback it is best to make sure that the glass is toughened/safety glass. I do like Bushboard products.................the only draw back with the Vista range of splashbacks is that most of them are 9mm thick, which can pose problems when trying to put the faces back on your sockets, as the screws may not reach. It's one of those products, that if you were going to use it, like very thick tiles, then you need to sort out your back boxes to accommodate it. Glass is usually supplied in 4mm like a standard tile, which doesn't give you the knock on problem with the sockets. The long socket screws are only 75mm, so they will not reach if you stick a 9mm product on the wall with adhesive. 6 of their products:- Constellation, Hazy Forest, Inner City Cloud / Ocean Grey, Kaldeidescope Grey / Blue come in 4mm, suitable for a wall. Standard Acrylic sheeting ( from just about anywhere ) is orderable - ( is that a word?) from 3mm up, but of course, may not be suitable for behind a hob. However, we have this in our downstairs shower room, and it's great.

Urgh, I had the same thing in my last house and I was forever repainting it! (And that was with a kitchen paint) What was most annoying is that I had wanted a much deeper upstand ie going up under the window cill, and the kitchen designers told me I was basically nuts and that’s not what I should get. I shouldn’t have listened to them. It’s fine elsewhere but the sink (and I didn’t have a bowl in it, ha ha) was a mare! You could get another section of the upstand cut to fit into the space. Or some heavy duty wall paint designed for wet areas. Or subtle mosaics perhaps

Thanks Sonia and Louise. I was initially going to tile to just below the extractor fan but to ensure of no splashes on the wall, I felt I needed the tiles to be higher. In the end I went for a feature wall of tiles but removed the upstand and splashback. I've still to put some reclaimed scaffold board shelves up so please ignore the copper brackets you can see in the picture. They're sitting on my worktop at the moment.

I had a similar problem. We opted for a more laminate kitchen upstand finish to match the worktop.

Hello, @Kay Moden made a good point, you don't have to have a quartz upstand if you don't want to and the backsplash can then be in glass or tiles that go straight tot he worktop.

Of you are going to go with an upstand you could look at a 'funky' glass backsplash like in the image below. This is from @Deco Glaze and here DecoKiln range. It really does make for a WOW factor and also because its glass its easy to wipe clean and no grouting that stains/gets dirty.
