Built in bench?

Hi everyone.
We have a walled courtyard garden, which last yet, I had decked. Keen to make the most of the space, the sun and still leave plenty of room for the kids to play (this is our main outside area), I was thinking of having a bench built along the wall (shown in pics). My thinking is that this would allow us to easily follow the sun and push a table close for outside dining but also leaves space for kids to play.
What are your thought? Would free standing furniture be better?

Should say that we have a load of lovely plants usually in the courtyard to 'soften it. Can't be seen here as I was just cleaning the decking :)

A custom bench (either freestanding or fixed) would be great, by building to your own design you can go for exactly the length/height that you want. I'd go for freestanding as it would always give you the option to adjust its position in future also go for built in storage underneath.

The mock up looks good! One word of advice to make the mock ups look as good in real life- keep the place tidy, when you first finish the decor of the rooms make sure you find a place for every toy, boom, remote control and make sure everything is kept in its place. It will make the rooms look more streamline and contemporary

irregular shaped patio dilemma

I am designing a patio space for my garden to run along the length of the kitchen bifold. The far end Of the patio would run up to the shed. The space in between the bifold and the shed isn’t square. It’s quite irregular in shape. I would like three zones to the patio. raised beds in an L shape running along the fence and shed with comfy benches built-in. See cross cross L shape on diagram. Of something similar. Possible firepit here. six seater patio dining set. Cooking area We are also putting in new fencing along the shed line and trellis in front of the shed. My dilemma is will the raised beds/ built in benches work with the irregular shaped area?

Your side extension sounds expensive at over £6k per square metre- I suspect that you wouldn’t recoup this in your resale. Also an extra 2m strip of room doesn’t equal an extra room so all you are doing is making a medium sized kitchen into one that’s big enough for an island. Consider if the space at the back could also be a dining room and understairs wc and if the kitchen would be better in the current dining room.

Thanks so much for replying! Our architect actually did sort of draw up that as an option but I’m not sure I want to obstruct the window onto the street and lose that light source. The section near the sliding doors into the garden will have skylights as it’ll be a 2.5m x 5m extension. Will that be too dark? Thinking it’ll be ok for dinner parties. We do have a separate living room and piano doesn’t have to stay, the only reason I put it in originally is that it fits perfectly in the alcove on the first plan. He said he didn’t put the dining space in that middle bit because it would be quite dark and it’s only 2.5m wide so actually a bit tight for a dining space I thought.

Hi Sarah

Built-in seating is great but doesn't give much flexibility when you want to move things around - or follow the sun. Perhaps consider something that has the look of a built-in bench but can be lifted and moved around to suit. This one also doubles as storage - great for the kids toys and stowing clutter in a small space! We also turned one of the walls into a climbing wall for the client's children.

Thanks Sarah Chalker. Once the children have grown out of it, it will be used to train climbing plants.
