Hi, I would suggest asking a seamstress or interiors shop to make slip covers for the headboard and the foot board. If you have side rails and don't need to see through them mabe covers could be made for them which velcro on. If you don't own the bed or don't mind telling the NHS that you didn't know, you could paint the head & foot boards. Also you could have a valance made of extra length that could velcro onto the bottom off the bed frame. If you rise and fall the bed when the bed is risen they could fall to floor length and when the bed is lowered it would hang like and extra long curtain by a window. Probably the best advice would be to find an interior design shop that gives free advice - most of them do, and ask them how to design your room and the bed so that it doesn't seem intrusive. The beds are quite dominant in a room but all is not lost. Covers, valences, throws and bedlinen can change the appearance. There are other options other than the NHS supplied bed which are very nice and look like any other bed and don't scream out what they are. If you could purchase the bed base and mechanism (or apply for charitable funding) you could locate it in the frame of a non-disability bed. To my mind this looks foxy and just like a typical bed. I hope this helps. Also, I sincerely mean it when I tell you "Well done." Living with a disability isn't easy whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally. It can be draining. Keep going, and have fun researching the bed. Once I was on Pintrest there were images of rooms eg kitchen which looked so amazing they put ideas on Houzz to shame! ;-) So who knows, maybe it will be the bed first and the next thing you know you are desiging your bedroom and who knows what else may then take your fancy! ;-P

Just an update on this project: done by my husband in 1/2 day with budget = Nil. Basically he lowered the bed and used the bed protection planks to be the supporting basis for the 2 shelves which have been turned into cupboards... might not be the final product but will do for the moment.

ok, I ordered some wallpaper but when it arrived it was more midnight blue and gold rather than black and gold which i wanted - albeit very nice. It wasn't right for the bedroom that we have been discussing here so I used it or another bedroom. Wow!! it was amazing. I therefore ordered another wallpaper (at huge expense!) and can now reveal my handwork today.. If you remember my initial posting it was all about linking my two bed cushions with something as I loved them so much... Well, no I am not sure they really sit well with my wallpaper.. And, still can't decide whether I need to change headboard to something more dramatic and what colour/style bedcover I should have.... and lamps???? I have become a monster!!! Thanks again for all your helpful comments - I have now ordered more wallpaper for my bedroom - cannot wait to do that... Before... After....
