Constructing a kitchen chimney breast

Hi Everyone, Im coming to the end of my kitchen project but I have this dilemma, my builder can't seem to figure out a safe way to construct a chimney breast to house the fan above the hob and ovens. Any help and advice with what material used would be appreciated.

In my head a standard timber frame with pink plasterboard then skim it with plaster seems very logical. What do you think?

Here is the space right now, i have 300mm after the ovens each side of the worktop:

Hi, I don't know if this is any help, but when the man came to fit my log burner he lined the back and sides of the hole in the chimney breast with fire board (I think that's what he called it), it looked the same as plaster board but it was white and I don't think it needed skimming I just painted it. It maybe didn't need skimming because each side was one piece with no joins and I'm assuming it's called fire board because it's fire retardant. Sorry to sound a bit vague, it was 3 years ago and obviously your builder would have to check it out for safety, but maybe there's some fireproof material that he could use to build the frame with too. My brother had a fake chimney breast built for his log burner also, so you could possibly check out a company that sells and installs log burners for advice?

I wouldn't put the legs of the chimney all the way down to the worktop. Personally I think it looks better as illustrated but also there is more work surface, and the material used in the construction of the chimney will be a safe distance away from the hob.
If you are set on the picture you used then gypsum is naturally fire retardant, as is stone and tiles.

Oh dear ! That's a bit of a mistake to put an appliance next to one of those types of corners - but to do it twice is a disaster !! A simple solution, might be to move the right cupboard into the place where bins are and put open shelving either side of the cooker - as then the door will be able to open father back in one side - it wouldn't work with just moving the end cabinet to there as the drawer handle would still clash- even if you changed the door handing to move the lower handle out of the way - simple shelves you can buy from somewhere like ikea or a local kitchen shop ?! and the door should open back further - different hinges might help too (not sure which they have put on ? ) Then re use the stone top either side of the cooker and buy a new deeper top ( chopping block might be nice ) over the recessed bit do you have a deep worktop with the cupboard still in line and space for a bin next to it ?!

Going back to original options with the sofas opposite each other, can you fit a tv unit under the stairs as that could look quite good? With regard to the L shaped arrangement with the tv on the unit, you could drill a circle in the back of the unit and store the play station and sky in there. Another option which I think could work is to swap the dining and living round as the dining end looks bigger. Have one sofa on the kitchen wall with the other opposite ( place the sofas about a foot from both walls) and hang the tv above the radiator. You could make a feature of the room with a built in tv, Sky and radiator cover, as per example attached from Andre hodges. That should still give you at least 4ft for a clear corridor to the kitchen ( on the basis the 7ft measurement you gave was from the side of the kitchen door!) I wouldn't paper the recesses now I've seen the whole room. Maybe considering papering or painting the kitchen wall to Bring the wall in so as to make it feel wider and give more interest to the lounge.

Hi, It depends on what the kitchen design is. If the kitchen is more traditional/rustic/rural, the chimney breast can be a great addition. If you go for a modern bathroom, you might want to consider knocking it down or maybe tiling it in big formats. Regards, Lukas

I personally think it would look better without it and just install a chimney/ fan. You have a modern hob and modern ovens and then you're fitting a traditional design chimney breast.

I would agree with Jonathan - don't go the whole way down to the worktop. We are living with that at the moment and it's just a pain - splashes from the hob muck it up, it's awkward to put stuff down nearby and I think you'll regret it. It should be a lot easier to wall-mount one of solutions suggested above - do the kitchen suppliers have a canopy available in the range you've done the kitchen in..?
