chimney breast in kitchen

Im considering incorporating kitchen design in the chimney breast. Will this sort of design will be cheaper than knocking the whole chimney breast down?

Hi,

It depends on what the kitchen design is. If the kitchen is more traditional/rustic/rural, the chimney breast can be a great addition. If you go for a modern bathroom, you might want to consider knocking it down or maybe tiling it in big formats.

Hi, I agree that trims don't look good. If you opt for a porcelain tile then it is possible to cut a tile and then re polish the cut edge with a stone polishing kit. The same way that they polish the edge on a granite work surface. You can buy a kit from the likes of screw fix, you also need a grinder. This then allows you to have a neat finished edge. Having said all that I would look into a smoked mirror splash back as it's much more contemporary and easy clean.

Hi there, we deal with this issue on a daily basis, generally we will always try to remove the chimney either to roof space or entirely (including roof stack on main roof). These options do of course involve the party wall and advice and guidance is needed. We do provide our own free PDF advice here. Failing to remove the chimney, you can as you mentioned, have shelving units etc. along that same wall to hide the chimney. Alternatively, you could use the money saved from the removal to purchase a heating system which could be fitted within the existing chimney flue (just a thought!). One piece of advice (hope this isn't out of turn!), your extension beyond the rear of 1500mm internally is a very minimal gain for the expense of the steel work involved in removing the rear wall of your property. We would generally advise against such extensions as you are not gaining enough floor space for the cost of works involved. The only way to save on some of the fabrication/steel costs would be to have a support post where your two large steel beams will meet, this then may impact the open feel you are trying to achieve! It’s rising damp, it will need sorting because if left for years it will affect surround wood - but it won’t be the end of the world if you can’t do it right now it will just look unsightly. See if the previous owner did some damp proofing and if it is covered by a guarantee (should be with all the paperwork from your solicitor).
