Encaustic tiles - grout looking grubby

I have some beautiful encaustic floor tiles in my bathroom, but the grout between them is getting pretty grubby (around the edges of the room the grout looks white but in the middle of the room it looks yellow). Does anyone have any tips for cleaning the grout? I have seen various websites recommending solutions of white wine vinegar or baking soda, but will that damage the tiles?

Hi Rachel

If you use a cotton bud and dip it into bleach you can bleach the grout lines, and if it is still yellow, you can buy a grouting pen.

It's never damaged my tiles, I hope this helps.

Hi Rachel,

We would advise against using bleach to clean the grout as it only stains the grout and doesn't get rid of the dirt. Bleach, as well baking soda and vinegar, will also break the grout down over time and damage it.

A specialist grout cleaner will clean the dirt and help restore the whiteness, without the risk of damaging your grout or the tiles themselves. If it's really bad, removing the grout and re-doing it is the best option, and then be sure to use a grout protector afterwards to ensure it stays clean and bright white in the future. You could also re-do the grout with a darker colour grout, as this is much easier to keep looking fresh.

Recommended cleaning products are ‘Synperonic A’ and ‘Vulpex’ spirit soap’, available from conservation suppliers, or ‘HG Extra’, ‘HG grease remover’, or ‘BAL Ceramic Floor Tile Cleaner’ available from good tile suppliers. Use Bellatrix before grouting and, after grouting, clean with a PH Neutral Cleaner or wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. After grouting, once floor is completely dry, apply another coat of Bellatrix and, if desired, a coat of wax such a Cera Noble Liquida. Have a word with your builder to see if he has the expertise to rectify this problem or if he will underwrite somebody else!

Hi Lucy, For a toilet floor a darker grey grout would be best to hide any stains or spills. However from your photo the base colour of the tile looks quite beige, so a coloured grout like the BAL Micromax2 in Lime would be a good option, this will keep a heritage look whilst being more practical than an off-white. Hi. Sorry I thought you were going for the gold grout in the photo :) I personally prefer the white grout in the first 2 pics but I think the light grey also works. If you wanted white grout have you looked at epoxy resin grout? We removed inherited tiles that were over 20 years old in our kitchen and the grout was spotless so I assume that's what they used. great that you can lay the tiles yourself, does that include the herringbone? Why not get a sample to see how the white compares to the encaustic as presumably that will be an off white? The brass sounds lovely and I agree with Rinq if you can add some wood as teal and white can be a cold combination but looks lovely in the 2nd pic

Steam cleaners are amazing for grout!

I also use a steam cleaner which works really well. I have also used white cane vinegar and baking soda mix and they came up a treat so now all I do is steam clean.
